Royal Irish with 9mm filter? Anyone heard of that?

So I'm looking at buying a Peterson Royal Irish on the ol' ebay, but apparently it's a 9mm filter with an "amber" acrylic stem. I've never heard of a Royal Irish with a filter (or any stem other than black acrylic/ebonite) and I want to make sure this isn't a knockoff or some such nonsense...

Dating McClelland tins with less than the full six numbers

I just received an order including a tin of Syrian Star and Ringlow Syrian Reserve, and they both have odd tin codes that deviate from the standard six numbers. Anyone know how to read these codes and date the tins? SS: 133 9 RSR: 140 13 (Both have a ~two-digit space between the first set...

Semois Group Buy over on /r/PipeTobacco

Not sure where to put this; please move it somewhere appropriate if need be! Anyway, I'm sure most of you have read the NYTimes article about Vincent Manil's Semois by now. A few guys over at PMF successfully organized a group buy a while back, and I am now thoroughly enjoying the stuff. :D...

I was lucky enough to acquire an 8oz bag of Esoterica Stonehaven (finally!), and now I'm opening it up to transfer it to a mason jar. However, these flakes are rather enormous and don't stack horizontally in the jar like most flake tobaccos—do you guys do anything about that or just stuff them...

    Dating Esoterica Tobaccos

Does anyone know if there's a clear indicator of the original seal date for a tin/bag of Esoterica Tobacco? I know G.L. Pease, McClelland, and others stamp or sticker a date on the bottom of their tins, but I can't find anything on my bag of Penzance.

    #2, Straight Billiard

I was shooting for another classic billiard on this one. It probably should have been rusticated, but I wanted to practice contrast staining some more. Feel free to tear it apart—I want to get better at this!

    First Pipe Progress Thread—Finished!

Alright, here goes my first pipe. I'll be tracking my progress (and probably asking a ton of questions) here, so feel free to check back and offer any advice / criticism! My lovely girlfriend bought me a plateaux kit from Mark Tinsky for Christmas, and I'm excited to dive in and get started...

Where do you store your tobacco?

I keep discovering fantastic blends that come in bulk, and I'm running out of places to store them once they get here. Any recommendations?

Hello all, Just wanted to introduce myself! My name is Drew, and I've been smoking pipes for about four years now. I'm also just starting to get into pipe carving as a hobby, and stumbled on this place while doing research for that. Looking forward to getting to know the community!
