As is my habit, I was sitting in my neighborhood pub, preparing to eat lunch, enjoying a pipe of F&T's Cut Virginia Plug, when the fellow that owns the tobacco shop(cigarrette store) next door comes in and approaches me, saying, "Dr. Grabow!".

I replied, "Charatan!, what the hell are you talking about?".

He wanted to know if Dr. Grabow was a good pipe line. I said they were a good cheap pipe line.

We spent a few moments discussing cheap and inexpensive pipes and it finally came out that he has the chance to sign up with a new distributor who carries Grabows and Missouri Meerschaums and he was thinking of stocking both.

I encouraged the idea, though, frankly, I cringe to think what will mostly be smoked in the pipes he sells, given his clientele.

As my lunch arrived, my friend started to leave and I stopped him and asked what brought all this on. He said that he has had several inquiries on pipe smoking and pipes recently. I asked what he thought may have provoked this and he replied that he had asked a couple of the folks what motivated them to investigate pipes, They replied, "I saw that old asshole next door at the pub and thought I might like to try it!".

He said "I guess they meant you!".

To which I retorted, "I'm not old!".

you argued the "old" portion but had no comment regarding the "asshole" part ?,,, :p

maybe you can wrangle some tobacco from the guy since you've sparked interest in pipe sales (resulting in his profit)

Shootist seems to know himself pretty well. ;)
That was a great story, but the part that really sticks out for me is: You can STILL SMOKE in a bar in Indianna?!!! I guess that's not too surprising. The Hoosiers are the only ones who have figured out daylight saving time is a load of crap. I wouldn't know; with Michigan's latest round of smoking laws, anyone who ever smelled like tobacco smoke has been relocated 30 miles from the state line. I hear we built a wall at the border, but I'm not allowed to ask about such things.

Public smoking may be short lived here in Indiana. The mayor just vetoed a smoking ban that included everything but hooka and cigar bars and casinos. He thinks that the veterans shoukld be able to smoke in their private clubs and the antis won't go it.

Now the State is trying to pass a statewide ban on everything but hooka, cigar bars and casinos. It seems that the casinos have proven that the ban would adversely affect their business and the state representatives agree, but don't think it will hurt small mom and pop owned bars!

I wish they'd ALL just mind their own damn business.

From the category of "So Crazy It Just Might Work", why not have the state sell smoking licences like liquor licences? By the time the laws took effect, there were already lots of totally non-smoking diners, bars and coffee shops. The few places (most independently owned) that still allowed smoking could have paid extra for the privilege. Non-smokers were already avoiding those places. The state would have made some money up front instead of spending on enforcement in hopes of collecting fines. This at a time when Michigan's economy was the worst in the country. Instead, we get higher taxes to cover the cost of running mom and pop out of business.

Aw, hell. There I go preachin' to the choir again.

I just about shot tea out of my nose laughing at the hidden punchline in that story. Thanks. Thanks a lot.

If you are ever thirty they probably consider you old,but I gotta wonder why they would think you an asshole!

A sage opinion indeed...and therefor doomed to fail!

Freedom...yeah, we voluntarily gave that up when the terrorists arrived. Can't even buy it now...well, unless you're of a certain class.

I have no questions as to why they would think I'm an asshole...It's one of the many things I excel at

Cool! Well, not at the asshole bit, but at the new recruits!
I meet way too many pipesmokers that are too embaressed to smoke in public. If people don't see us, they won't know about us!
