Got my 1st cob today...pretty sure its a MM legend. I know its mm, says so on the sticker on the bottom of the pipe, but it doesn't say what model. I went on the MM site and matched it up...clear amber stem, smaller bowl, unfinished...same as the legend.

In any case I was surprised at how well it smokes right off the bat, although I shouldn't be after reading all the testimonials to how good they smoke here. Smokes cool and clean.

How many times can I smoke this thing in a day? Does it ghost like briar does?

Congrat's on your 1st. cob.

It's a great smoking care free pipe, enjoy and Happy New Year :joker:

Lol you really want pictures of a cob?
Okay, fine include your boxer, then. You don't have to try and have her hold it in her mouth, though... heheheh

Yes, a cob will ghost. I haven't found anything that doesn't.

If it'd really a natural. it would be a Pride, but with an amber bit, yes, it's a Legend, which is a finished pipe. For more information on the care and feeding of cobs, check out:

John, somehow I have overlooked these guides you put together... they are great! Very informative and have given me new appreciation for cobs. Thanks for the time and effort in writing them.

Is it normal for a cob to go out more than other pipes? Mine seems to be doing this. Is it due to the increased air flow or the porousness of the cob?

No it shouldn't. If you read my Primer, you'll get lots of useful tips, including what my dad started me out with, which I still follow.

Dry your tobacco more than you think you need to.
Pack it looser than you think you need to.
Smoke it slower than you think you need to.
Tamp it less , and more lightly, than you think you need to.
Clean your pipes after every smoke, using pipe spirits of some sort.
Don’t worry if you have a few relights.

My cobs seem to go out quite a bit, but I am fine with it, I think it is mostly because I am still perfecting the art of packing a pipe.

I'll tell you what tiltjlp, I'm liking the cob alot...but the legend is small. Whats the best offering MM has in a regular to large sized pipe, or are they all basically the same?

Larger sized cobs are the Patriot, Diplomat, Great Dane Egg & Spool, General, and the Freehand. Check out my Guide for my opinions on each of them, and visit MM's site to see each one.

I prefer the Natural versions, which can only be ordered from the factory as of now. For Finished models, many e-tailers offer them, and Mars has very good prices.

Got to MM site and you'll see many different types. The Freehand is a pretty big cob and is real affordable. I'm thinking of gett'en a Freehand myself.

I never tried a cob until DoverPipes gifted me one last summer. I was amazed by how well they smoked. My briar superiority complex was shattered. :p
