Generally, I avoid aromatics. Two exceptions for me, at least for the time being, are McB's Navy Flake and Butternut Burley. I've recently been hearing a lot, however, about the German blend Sillems Black. Those who like it praise it to Heaven, including some who have gone to the length to announce it on YouTube. Some of the people from whom I heard the news, however, are self-admitted aromatic-only smokers and not known to me as discriminating smokers with a cultivated palate, at least afaik and if there is such a thing. I searched Sillems in these groups and did not come up with any reference. Has anyone here heard about this tobacco blend?

I don't know how long Sillem's has been around, but if it's a recent invention, then they seem to be trying to follow the business model established by the likes of Davidoff and the later Dunhill. Sillem's has its fancy trademark and they seem to love to slap it on all kinds of toys for boys--cuff links, ashtrays, a line of cigars, a line of pipes, a line of pipe tobacco. Stop me if any of this sounds familiar.

I haven't tried the Black, but I did review the Linea Epoque Antique. It was a decent aromatic--actually lovely on the nose--but undermined by too much humectant and a nibbly disposition. The tabacs are manufactured in Germany by K&K.

I haven't been inspired to smoke any other Sillem's blends, but those more familiar with the world of aromatics may find something appealing there. Here's a link to their English site.

Thank you both for your replies.

Yes, Sasquatch, some in tobaccoreviews have posted veritable dithyrambs (i.e., ecstatic choral song-poems) over this aromatic. But one wonders if - given the relative anonymity of postings - these are not just shills or the trendy-uncultivated. Someone I know said he smelled the tin aroma of one of the Sillem's mixture and commented that it smelled like a Gallic maison de joie. Even in the tin, honest backy is not supposed to smell like this. I would tend to agree with beaupipe that we may be dealing with a trendy Euro-yuppie campaign here.

Which one smelled like a French whorehouse? I think I might like that one. :affraid:

Euro-piddle or not, one thing this blend may have going for it is that the ingredient list bears a striking resemblance to some very tasty and lesser known tobaccos. Namely, Blatter Reserve and Blatter London Mixture. Both have a significant Black Cavendish base, both have significant doses of Latakia, and both are obviously topped tobaccos, yielding kind of a hybrid English. Very, very tasty. So if Sillem's hits that, it may be a winner.

The smell or the whorehouse? Or both? :face: I think it was Sillems Black. This is just hearsay, mind you. Like Viagra, it might not have the same effect on everyone.

Sasquatch your point is both well-made and large-minded. I am becarmed, as the late Robert Newton would say.

What it really comes down to is that I'm a hopeless tobacco slut and dig up excuses to buy a tin of damn near anything.
