This is just a "rumor" at this point ...

A local tobacconist says she was visited by a salesman for a LEADING company that makes "roll your own" leaf. She tells me they are planning to DISCONTINUE their rolling pouch tobacco ...

But will REPLACE it with similar blends in the "rough cut" PIPE TOBACCO ... then will sell a small "grinder" on the side so that the RYO, MYO crowd can buy their products at the "OLD - PRE-SCHIP PRICE" as Pipe tobacco, and grind it themselves to cigarette cut!

(Congress, in its infinite wisdom, did NOT raise PIPE LEAF tax by 2,000+%, as they did "rolling leaf" - and basically, left it alone!)

I had a RYO maker tell me today that they were changing production to the thicker cut. But not why. Well, only because pipe smokers like it that way.

The wifes brand of RYO cigarette tobacco is now marketed as "light pipe tobacco",,,

"Hey, some dude with a target on his back just jumped into my foxhole," shouted the pipe smoker. Were I a gambler, I'd put money on the RYO tax levy being applied to pipe tobacco by the end of the year. Canada, for example, doesn't distinguish between RYO and pipe tobacco and that tax grab model will almost certainly soon be south of the border.

I can't know what the future hold, but if a similar increase happens to remove the RYO/pipe distinction [by tax rate or by FTC definition], it'll have to happen after the four-year span of this levy, i.e., two election cycles from now.

If you have personal stocks, now might be a good time to expand them. S-CHIP MOD 1 next year, imo, will see this minor error (their opinion) corrected.

What Congress gives, they can give more. Doc Manhattan, I have no doubt they'll fiddle with the rates as soon as a staffer connects the dots.

We'll be screwed.

At the pipe shop I frequent, they have samples of a blend called Red Cap that is marketed by ZigZag as pipe tobacco. It's nothing more than a rougher cut of RYO. They are trying to legitimize it by not packaging it with papers(obviously), and by promoting a pipe you can send away for on the inside of the packaging. The companies out there doing this are going to ruin it for the rest of us.

This sounds almost like video poker in SC. Our family used to have 4 machines in our convenience store. We had regulars who came in every few days and we kept an eye on them to make sure they weren't blowing the whole wad. Then, when the tax on profits from the machines went up, guys started building what were basically mini casinos in order to "cover their tax hike." This led to backlash from the religious groups in the state(If you're in the South, you know what I mean.) and the eventual ban.
