Can anyone name this famous pipe smoker?

My local newspaper just ran this photo on their website, taken in downtown Kalamazoo, in 1964.



They describe him as "buying a newspaper", but I think we all recognize the way he's holding his right arm. You can't quite see a pipe in his hand, but he is leaving a pipe shop!



Any guesses as to who this fellow is?
(Hint: Unless you're rather young, you've seen him on T.V., but rarely in his glasses.)
