Carey Magic Inch

Need some advice....I received on of my pipes from ebay, a Carey Magic Inch Hand Carved Custom for 5 bucks!. Anyway I am quite happy with this pipe as it appears to be unused but...... the bowl is covered with what looks like carbon? Did Carey pipes ever pre carbon their bowls. I'm just wondering if I should swab the bowl out or leave it to help the cake?

I seem to remember Cary pipes having a coating in their bowls. I think they carried pipes made by many different makers, so I wouldn't think it odd to find one that has been pre-carbed.

thanks maxpeter for the information. I haven't been able to find anything out myself about the pre carbon but that sure is what it looks like, almost like coal dust.
Anyway I'll smoke a bowl in it and see what happens

I have a few new in boxes, and they are all pre-carbonozed bowls.
