it's ASTONISHING how freakin' clueless we are about what causes and cures and prevents cancer.

the only really good news is that there are enough of us human beings getting cancer that statistically we figure out what might cause or might cure or might prevent cancer by not a lot more than dumb luck. so it certainly could be worse!

someday we'll just figure it all out and science will slap its forehead collectively and go "oh - man - how the eff did we miss that for so long?!???!" and there'll be no more mutated cells replicating willy nilly in our bodies.

that'll be a GOOD DAY f'shizzle!

Prolly not, Jim. The prejudice in favor of the false belief that tobacco has no beneficial health effects whatsoever seems too deeply entrenched to ever be dislodged. Tobacco currently suffers from an even worse version of the same prejudice that afflicts radiation hormesis; no amount of evidence is sufficient to convince those with closed minds that the truth can possibly be anything other than what their rigid belief system prescribes.

The tobacco prejudice is ridiculous anymore. I was listening to an NPR show yesterday that was supposed to be an informative look at the nostalgic resurgence of pipe smoking in this country and the very first caller let rip with the "I'm insulted you'd even touch this topic, you should be ashamed" nonsense. Immensely less dangerous than cigarettes (not even in the same category realistically) and done in moderation, not inhaled, contempaltive, performed by informed adults. The person simply would not entertain it, got to nanny it out of existence. Your rights are less important than my fears and prejudices. Circling the drain.....
