NCL...Norwegian Cruise Lines allow cigarette smoking in their casino..but no pipes or cigars.
 
Most cruise ships only allow pipes and cigars on the open deck smoking areas or in the cigar bar.
 
Seems like foolish business policy to me. You light up a good pipe or a Churchill, you're a potential casino customer for the next few hours. Though I'm sure there's a roomful of guys with calculators and spreadsheets who've figured out exactly the cost of scrubbing one cigarette from the air to the amount of money played, and they could show me the actuarial table that says my theory is crapola.

I get seasick anyway, so it's a policy not likely to affect me. :no:
 
I just arrived home from a 7 day cruise on the Norwegian Jewel from New York City to Port Canaveral Florida and Paradise Island Nassau Bahamas. I didn't see one pipe smoker and only a handful of cigar smokers. Pipes and cigars are only allowed in designated areas on outdoor decks. I did not take any pipes along because I don't enjoy smoking outside cruise ships due to constant high wind conditions. Most time is spent putting endless amounts of food and drink in ones mouth so the pipe is not missed. If you are on board while the ship is in port and you choose not to participate in a shore excursion I would recommend a fine cigar. I left the ship each day to spend beach time so I did not have a good stretch of time for a cigar between meals and activities. I also wore a medicated transdermal patch behind my ear to prevent sea sickness. I surmise that the administration of medication dulls the senses somewhat as I did not seem to need a smoke until I was home for two days and the effects wore off. In any event the cruise was great and I highly recommend it if you've never experienced one.
 
The scopolamine in the most popular seasickness patch comes from the nightshade family (cousins of tobacco), so it would make sense that it blunted the itch for a smoke.
 
Doc: Good to have you around. I guess I came to the same realization without a real medical degree. My diploma is an MBA in Healthcare Administration from Bernard M. Baruch College and Mt. Sinai School of Medicine (City University of New York). The cruise was outstanding.
 
My degree's in English, and not even a doctorate--"Doc" is purely a nick. I just have a good deal of experience with seasickness. My father gets very very seasick and has used those patches for years to indulge my mother's love of cruise touring.
 
Hey Doc: Still good to have you around. Just don't write any prescriptions. Your dad must be quite a guy. What he would go through just to please his wife. At least he is well fed, well rested, drunk and happy. His life sure is tough on a cruise ship. And to boot, he does not have to take out the garbage.

LOL. I took seasickness pills way way way back when as a precautionary measure and found they were unneeded..

Did you get your sealegs or did you ever try?

Note:Drinking on a ship is great, you hit a point where your drunken sway matches the seas movement.. Nirvana.. lol
 
I tried to get my sealegs years ago and got seasick. I decided at that time that I did not want to waste another cruise day hanging overboard so ever since I wear the patch. I was able to eat round the clock, drink my buds and daquari's, sit in a hot tub, swim and chill out between shows. It is an unreal experience that abruptly ends. Now I'm back home recovering with my pipe and scotch.

Was on the Carnival Elation over Christmas -- except parts of the outside decks, no other smoking except for cigarette smoking allowed at a few of the machines in the casino. Since I was never big on Cubans, while my wife had fun in Cozumel, I bought a couple of Fuente coronas and watched the ships, tourist boats, and parasailers pass by. A nice relaxing way to spend an afternoon! I saw a number of other cigar smokers but not a pipe in sight.
 
If the active ingredients in that patch are related to nicotine, how about puffing a pipe to allay mal de mer? If I (over)eat to the point of feeling queasy (on dry land), a pipe always makes me feel much better.

Then there's snuff if it's too windy.

I guess you'll have to experiment and report back to us. All I can say is I had a blast and my pipes all had a well deserved rest. Back here on the home front we're all fired up settled in and comfortable. Now I'm pouring my own scotch but the good news is I don't have to sign for it.
 
My wife insisted on another Carnival cruise this year; instead of the Elation, it was the Conquest (again out of New Orleans). Negatives on smoking: no cigar/pipe smoking in the casino or on cabin balconies, and the open deck area available for smoking was even smaller than what Elation had. On the plus side, Conquest has a nice smokers' lounge (Vincent's -- the ship's motif is all french Impressionist/post-Impressionist). I should have brought a few pipes, as pipe smoking was specifically mentioned along with cigars. I did get a few cigars and smoked them in both the lounge (pretty empty during the day) and on deck.
