I just recieved a pipe rack from my sister-in-law that her boy friend purchased at an estate sale. Though it is pretty nice (pictures to come), it had potpourri in the mason jar it came with. What is the best way to remove the smell/oils of the potpourri from the jar? Can I just simply hand wash the jar with soap?

P.S. This is my first pipe rack, and have only been smoking pipe for a year (seriously just a few months). What is the small clay stone in the center of the lid? It says AZTEC on it, I assume it is some sort of humidification device.

You are right in thinking that the clay disk is a humidifing device. I have them in some of my antique tobacco jars.

I would think that extremely hot water & soap would get most of the scent out of the jars, & some apple cider vinegar might neutralize whatever is left after that.

The other option is to see how bad potpourri flavored tobacco really is... might be a DIY lakeland treatment.

Stackle is giving good tips on the vinegar. I've also had good success using baking soda and newspaper stuffed into the jar for a few days. This is after the soap & water & vinegar treatment.

Thank you for all the help! I will try them all, starting with the soap, ending with the apple cider vinegar!!

...if vinegar doesn't work, try household ammonia. dilute it to about 50/50 with water, put in a spray bottle, and mist the inside. Do this somewhere in the garage or where the stink won't getchya. Close the doors and wait about 10 minutes. Open and let air out for another 10. Repeat this until the stink is gone.

This worked on a beautiful antique table I had that the previous owner scented with rosewater. It was eye-watering. Ammonia took care of it, you could almost smell the original wood resin afterward.

Good luck.
