I was a big fan of "The Shield" and Vic Mackey

Hard to pick just one:

Stacy Keach as Mike Hammer
Chuck Connor as the RIfleman
John Russell as Marshal Dan Troop
Richard Boone as Paladin
Don Johnson as Nash Bridges

Just to name a few

"Omar comin'."

I don't know how many of you watch Boardwalk Empire on HBO, but this is the guy who plays Chalkie White. He is one of the minor gangsters in Atlantic City. He is also one bad dude in that series.

Omar is sure a bad dude, but lets not forget the baddest

For me without a doubt it's Al Swearingen from the HBO series Deadwood...aired around 2004. Don't know how many of you were lucky enough to have watched this series, but imo it was the best one HBO has ever put out...and that is saying something. Anyways here's a funny clip of Swearingen talking to Wu. Wwarning...this clip is not for the easily offended.<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/sUVTkr-A4Ak" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" frameborder="0" loading="lazy" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Same here. It was such a different role than the one he played on The Comish.

Now, outside of the TV medium, the greatest tough guy is Jack Carter...
I loved that movie when it came out (lucky to have caught it in its initial release as the studio practically buried it!), and I love it now. I've even managed to obtain a copy of the original novel in which it was based. Forget the unspeakeable remake, this one is the real thing. Carter's growing sense of loathing, about his enemies and his own life, is almost palpable in this film. It merits a good Blue Ray remanstering/restoration deal.

Absolutely!
And Caine's portrayal of Carter does not come across as "acting". It feels real! The anger and hate are palpable.
The scene where he slowly removes Ian Hendry's glasses, and tells him that his eyes look like "piss holes in the snow" is one of my all time favorite film moments.

I love and agree with all the postings.

Being Greek and my dad being sort of a big deal, I met Telly Savalas at a Greek Restaurant in Chicago and he was a hoot. He was chomping on scenery and charming the panties off of a lot of women.

Sunday afternoons were RESERVED for The Rifleman!

What can you say about Vic Makey (another Greek, by the way!) aside from staying out of the state of California? The wider berth the better.

But, in the end, one has to choose, and I, too, have to agree about Carter. How can one do both Alfie and Get Carter is a mystery. The guy is STILL doing great work.

Have you seen "Harry Brown?" The guy is still a player!

I can't believe that nobody mentioned Leroy Jethro Gibbs. Gibbs and Paladin get my vote. They can split it between the two of them. It ought to be a good fight.
