Well, I finally tried this amazing tobacco this morning as my after work bowl. So I loaded up an old Sasiene Royal Stewart that was my grandfather's. At first light I was neither impressed nor dismayed, sort of ambivalent. Not knowing what to expect, I kept on keeping on and as I progressed through the bowl the character changed, and I began to see why so many pipe smokers laud this blend. I am not terribly good at describing flavors, however to me it seemed to get sort of spicy as I smoked it and I am intrigued with the changes that happened in the taste as the bowl progressed! Needless to say, I will be purchasing more tins of this fine tobacco, and let them age to see how time changes it.

Cheers!

John

Escudo was my earliest and still continues to be a favorite. Mature VA and perique, and a few other blending tricks, I think.

Last I heard in the pipe blend juggling wars, Orlik made it; but now that Scandavik sp group claims ownership. Orlik is a Scandavik company?

I remember enjoying Escudo quite a bit a few years ago, until I hit that wall where perique just became too dominating, too distracting. Same thing happened to me with latakia, but I came back to it after a while, enjoying blends where it's used with a lighter hand and it's working out well.

Another excellent vaper to try is McClelland St James Woods.

The tin reads " Made in Denmark by Scandinavian Tobacco Group Assens A/S"
Imported by Lane Ltd.

I am experimenting with different tobaccos, I am just getting back into pipe smoking and the old aromatic heavily cased Cavendish ones are not my cup of tea these days.

YEP. STG owns a BUNCH of old blending houses now. I believe they are the largest Tobacco gonglomerate in Europe.

Ah, a new Escudo initiate! Very nice. Be prepared to be seduced by a new world of classic VaPers.

Yummy, yummy, yummy.

Yea, I enjoy perique with VA, but as amazing as Escudo smells, the perique in it is really just too much for me. I guess I'm not so much a VaPer smoker as I am a smoker of VA with just a little perique sprinkled in. I wonder what percentage perique must be mixed with a VA in order to call a blend a VaPer. To my knowledge blends like Marlin Flake and HotW aren't? Old Gowrie? Bah, I suppose there's no true definition...just a matter how one person or another sees it.

Haven't met a perique I didn't like, even Cool Hand Fluke, 40%; but then the HOs almost seem normal as regards strength.

Congrats Fatman! One of my favourites as well. You may want to give the Stokkebye Luxury Bulls Eye Flake a go as well. Another fine blend IMO.
Good luck and Enjoy! :D

I think my tin of escudo said Villager which I think is a stokkabye name

Villager had been the US distributor until last year. Now I think Lane distributes Stokkebye in the USA.

Escudo was my first VaPer. It hooked me into the world of VaPers and one which I continue to enjoy in all it's variables these many years later.

Lots of others out there, but I do still smoke and enjoy Escudo. It doesn't seem to have changed in over the 12 years I've been smoking it. Kudos to the blenders/producers.

Cheers,

RR

I am enjoying a bowl of this as I type, I like it!

I just bought two tins of Escudo from 2001. Absolutely incredible taste. Sweet yet full.
I am especially amazed in the complete and utter lack of tongue bite.

If anyone has any aged tins out there, I'm open for business!

T'ain't nuttin bettah. Portuguese coins I call em. Best VaPer out there IMHO.

Escudo is one of those rare tins that actually increase in value over time. It's good and can be better with years on it. I can handle only a bowl or two before reaching that point of satiation where I start levitating (i.e. damn full of nicotine). Needless to say, it is one of our hobby's great tobaccos and hopefully will be around for a lifetime.

I should have a tin coming in a few days. It was an impulse buy and I hope I end up liking it.
