I found a painting I had inquired about here.  The painter was Frank B. Mayer, the painting "Independence":



This is my idealized self image while smoking.

Damn. I have that book, and your original query from months ago rang no bells.
 
I spent quite a lot of time searching for it on-line to no avail. I just stumbled across it by accident. Having read the book a bit I clearly recall the painting but could not remember the source. It may have appeared elsewhere; its a nice painting.

I also recall your request and did some searching myself to no avail.
But had no idea it looked like that, that's a great picture. Really like the colors
and the mood the painter captured in it. It relaxes you just looking at it. ;)
 
Subject Jack Porter at 75 yrs of age on his farm called Rose Meadow, he opened one of the first coal mines.
 
Very nice! I have to agree with Cart. It does evoke a sense of calm just looking at it.
