Larry "Rhino" Reinhardt, a guitarist best known for his brief stint with the psychedelic rock band Iron Butterfly, died Monday (Jan. 2) in Florida, the Sarasota Patch reports. He was 63.

Reinhardt was hospitalized last week with an infection, and by Sunday, he had been moved to intensive care. According to the Patch, he was placed on life support but taken off a short time later, possibly in accordance with the terms of a living will.

A native of Bradenton, Fla., Reinhardt joined Iron Butterfly in 1970, some three years after the band released its most famous tune, 'In-A-Gadda-Da-Vidda.' Alongside fellow axeman Mike Pinera, he replaced guitarist Erik Brann and played on one album, 'Metamorphosis.'

Prior to performing with Iron Butterfly, Reinhardt gigged with local groups in and around Sarasota. His early bands included the Load and Second Coming, which featured Dicky Betts and Berry Oakley, later of Allman Brothers Band fame.

Following Iron Butterfly's breakup in 1971, Reinhardt founded Captain Beyond, a band that featured fellow ex-Butterfly member Lee Dorman and lasted until 1977.

In 1979, Reinhardt formed Rhino, and in subsequent years, he continued to play music, occasionally participating in Iron Butterfly reunions. Last year, he released 'Back in the Day,' an album credited to Rhino and the Posse. In August, he took to the stage at a benefit for Dan Toler, an Allman Brothers member afflicted with Lou Gherig's disease.

The first Captain Beyond record is a classic. Rhino did some really sweet work on that one. Alas, all my heroes seem to be passing... Steve Marriott, Terry Kath, Jimi, Dominic Troiano, Gary Moore, Rhino, George Harrison, John Lennon, the list just gets longer.
