Hi, I am Rivyer from NE England. I am playing around with the idea of taking up the pipe but would rather steer clear of actual tobacco if i can help it. My main reason for this is that I am an avid cosplayer (Costume Play for those who do not know the term.) and will be soon adding the Hobbit Pippin to my collection of costumes and for a change i would like to be photographed doing something more hobbit like and pipe smoking seems like something relaxing that I would enjoy. I am also a Sherlokian so its just natural and cleaner than the things Sherlock would prefer to inject into himself.

Anyway i have probably ranted on for too long and shall now go and lurk around the forum.

Welcome aboard, Rivyer, and merry Christmas. (sorry, make that happy Christmas for an Englishman :p )
You may not realize this, but pipe smoke is not meant to be inhaled. Compared to cigarettes, the health risks are greatly reduced, and the chance of nicotine addiction for an occasional smoker is minimal. If you have other reasons for avoiding tobacco, speak up. I've heard some of the brothers here speak of alternative smoking blends, so that knowledge is here to be found. Enjoy the forum.

Welcome Rivyer! While hobbit's smoke tobacco in a pipe, they also have large hairy feet. We can help with the pipe or tobacco, not sure about the large hairy feet tho..... :santa:

I'll bet if we all sent him some hair from our own feet he'd have more that enough for his costume. It would also disgust the customs workers so much that they'd stop inspecting his parcels, clearing the way for us to send him duty-free tobacco! :p

Thanks for the welcome guys, as for the feet I have no worries with my size elevens the problem lies in my height which sits around 6.7 but i am not too concerned about that. I look forward to getting to know you all.

Welcome Rivyer, and merry Christmas to you.

See George, we do merry too.

:lol!: Don't mind me; I was deep into a bottle of Christmas cheer last night when I posted that.
Merry is an odd word. A typical American will go his entire life without using it in any other phrase. "Gee, Doris, Stan was in a merry mood last night." Nope. "We'll all be a lot merrier when the widget factory starts hiring again." Still no. Merry Easter? Merry Yom Kippur? Merry Flag Day? No, we just don't say that. For some reason, though, "Happy Christmas" just sounds wrong to Yank ears.

I tend to use the 'Merry Christmas and a Happy new year.' If i know I will not be seeing that person till after the new year has kicked in.
I have just made a post on my facebook about me taking up the pipe and was oddly supported by my friends. So I think I will take that leap.

I have also had a browse around and have decided to even go to try an actual real blend. As I am Hobbit mad at the moment I will be buying the taster set of the Middle Earth Blends, may also have a friend joining me in tying pipe smoking.
I hope I take to it and if not then I will still have a pipe for my costume and later a display piece, so either way is a win it seems.

Thanks Guys again.

I have a quick question for you, I get paid tonight and am thinking of purchasing my pipe. Now the style I want is of course long like that in the LOTR and Hobbit movies. I did some looking and found some Churchwardens that seem right but is there anywhere cheaper and better to look or should I just go for the ones I found using a basic google search?

Thanks in advance.

My first pipe was a Peterson churchwarden. It smokes great and I still use it. I've read other guys on BOB stating that Savinelli Churchwardens are quality smokers.

If its your first pipe I'd advise buying a good make that will smoke well for you. A Peterson Churchwarden will cost around £55(link below).

You might be able to buy one a bit cheaper if you shop around.

Hope this helps.

BTW not all the brothers are fans of churchwarden pipes. Opinion is definitely divided! :lol!:

I would suggest posting the same question here in the Pipe Rack column, or even the Round Table. Better chance of the right guys seeing it that way.

Do you just want a churchwarden, or do you want a churchwarden that actually looks like like the pipes they used in the films? I've been having similar desires and I can share with you some of my findings:

I would avoid the 'looking for a churchwarden to buy' type searches on google, there are a lot of Chinese and poor quality manufacturers that flood the results, there are good pipes in there but just doing a general search like that is going to get you very mixed results. If you just want a good reasonably priced churchwarden, I would look at Peterson or the Stanwell Hans Christian Anderson range, or possibly Chacom. Of those, my personal favourites would be the Hans Christians, but they are a bit more pricey.

If you are looking for an actual replica LOTR churchwarden, things get very tricky. There were a line of officially licensed replicas made by Vauen up until 2011, but the anti smoking pressure groups in America forced the studio to not renew the licence, so now those pipes are very rare and ridiculously expensive. I saw a Gandalf pipe going for nearly $1000 this week. But you can still get them if you have the cash.

Official Gandalf pipe: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/VAUEN-Original-Herr-der-Ringe-Gandalf-Pfeife-Kult-Sammlerstuck-Raritat-/390454132115

There is also a less reputable company named MacQueen pipes that has a very bad history in terms of customer service that also make similar replica pipes, they apparently smoke ok, but the delivery could take you 6 months to a year. Or never. You takes your chances with them really.

Hope this has been helpful mate!

Oh, I should also mention that while Vauen made the official pipes until 2011, they also continue to make a pipe called the Noble N293, which has a different stem but an almost identical bowl to the Gandalf pipe, and looks quite decent by itself.

So close in fact that unscrupulous people on the net are reselling them as 'New' hobbit pipes, I saw one go for over £500 this week when you can buy them from Vauen for a hundred and something. Ahh internet, you're up to no good again.
