On the link Kyle provided, the 'Apple' bowl is the one I prefer. It's not as tall as the 5th Avenue, but to me it's worth having thicker walls. And as far as Cobs go, that Diplomat with the Apple bowl is about as thick as it gets.

Dusty - if you want one to last for the duration, that's what I would go with. They haven't let me down yet... 8)

I'm not saying that there's anything wrong with the other design or thinner walls, just personal experience and my own preference.

I'm a cheap-ass, but I also want things to last - if that makes sense.

I smoke a Washington model, in fact, I have two--and I love them. They have thin walls, and they're just fine. My only complaint with the Washingtons are the lack of a hardwood bottom (thanks Rob, the mud is working well :D ) and the smaller bowl size. Solution? 5th Ave. 8)

This monster 5th Ave has the thickness of a Classic Diplo but the shape of the 5th Ave. It's a pretty nifty thing, really. Light as a feather, too...

That's Cool! A Diplomat 5th Ave. with extra thick walls - now that's a keeper. Glad the pipe mud is working out for you, as mine's holding up just fine to regular use.

Gotta love the Diplomats - hardwood bottoms, better mouthpieces than some models, and thick walls. Just add a 'Forever Stem' to one, and it'll be around longer that you or I will. 8)

Diplomats are my fave, right along with the Washingtons. The Washington pipes are great for my field work and travel.

I haven't smoked the monster 5th Ave yet. I have a standard 5th Ave that I was using as a "glove box pipe," but honestly I rotated out another standard Diplomat and kept it in a more respectable manner; I'm not sure how long MM will keep making the 5th Ave--gotta take care of it! The 5th Aves smoke just as nicely as the standards, they just hold a little more. Sure, you feel a little more heat, but that only makes you mind your smoke temps a bit more. 8)

I know I keep mentioning it, but I'm smitten with the recent realization of the existence, and now the possible future of a bulldog cob...I just can't wait. How cool is that gonna be?

I was under the impression that the 5th Ave was replacing the Diplomat. It's funny: I've never owned a Diplomat apple, but now I want one if they're going away. :p It would keep my MM diamond-shank company.

It's my understanding that the 5th Avenue model is here to stay, and that there will be two Diplomat models, as long as they grow enough larger cobs for the old-style Diplomat.

Either way - all the more reason to stock up on a few more of the old model, bent stem of course.

Though I prefer the thicker walls, I'll have to get a couple of the 5th Ave. just for the fun of it. Classic syndrome = even though I have plenty of MM Cobs, I just gotta get the new one too!

On a related note : not cobber here, but curious that nobody seems to have mentioned this :

We are a Missouri Meerschaum dealer and proudly sell their Corn Cob pipes. Missouri Meerschaums are wonderful pipes, but their stems leave a lot to be desired. Many times the stems get chewed up beyond comfortable use well before the corn cob bowls have given up the ghost. We offer a solution which we call ‘Forever Stems’<img class="emojione" alt="™️" title=":tm:" title=":tm:" src="https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/emojione/assets/png/2122.png?v=2.2.7"/>. Our ‘Forever Stems’ range from Standard and fancy Vulcanite replacements to Churchwardens to Fancy colored swirl Lucite. These stems are all individually made from stem blanks of the best materials available. The stems and buttons are hand shaped and the dot is hand inlaid.

The stem dot on each stem, an Acrylic circle with a Brass dot centered in it, gives an added ‘touch of class’ to these beautiful stems. Your ho-hum Corn Cob pipe will become a conversation piece, something you won’t hesitate to smoke in public (if the law allows!), and will still give the wonderful smoke you expect from a corn cob pipe. The neat part is that with few exceptions, one Forever corn cob stem fits all Missouri Meerschaum Corn Cob pipes, old and new. You will be able to move your stem from pipe to pipe to pipe forever.
I have no idea if the airways of these are any better than what comes on a MM or not, but it seems worth calling attention to.

As for whether it's worth putting more money into a stem than a pipe, my answer is an emphatic "Yes. It is." (This with respect to picking up old Britwood @ Flea Bay & having LL make state-of-the-art re-stems that catapault them into the 99th percentile).

So, FWIW (if anything)

Thanks Kyle and you all.
I have a couple of Generals,,,, and I had a Diplomat, and now that you brought it up, WTH ? Where The Hell is my Diplomat? I havent seen it in a while

I do have the churchwarden forever stem, and I do like it, I just need to get another shorter forever stem

Just a reminder that MM cobs now come with acrylic bits, which look and feel almost as good as the old plastic bits, which I preferred. This isn't to take anything away from Forever Stems, in fact have a Walker acrylic stem on one of my few briars, and I love it. But I'm one of the few folks who really did like the plastic MM bits.

I just like the standard-issue cob stems. The black plastic is fine, the old yellow plastic is fine. Both feel great on my teeth. Maybe one day I'll get a Walker Forever Stem, but for now? *shrug*

One peculiarity I do like to do is take pipes intended for bent stems and put straight stems on them. That little bit of an angle the shank turns up works much better with a straight stem to accommodate my overbite. The cob bent stem setups as-is almost put the bowl edge vertical if I clench it.

I've looked at the walker stems several times, but never pulled the trigger. Just now, I was looking at their website and realized they're located in Manchester, Michigan. That's only about two hours from here! I should see if I can stop by there sometime and get an up-close look at their work. Maybe take a few pictures and post the story here.

At the risk of sidetracking this thread a little, MM also has a bag of 10 seconds on their site too, with "cosmetic flaws" but all smokeable they say. Just found it interesting.

At that price, I say go for it! Who cares if they have cosmetic flaws. Smoke them at home, take them fishing or hiking, give them as gifts (to fellow pipe smokers), or throw them in the truck.

I'm the biggest cheapskate on here, but even for me that's quite tempting.

A relatively recent development, and possibly in response to WBW ?

Pictures & a first-hand account would be neat !

Heck yeah, completely agreed, they will be part of my next PAD order also will be a 5th Ave.
