How do you tame your beard?

I've been growing my beard for about 2 months now and just used beard gloss for the first time this morning in hopes of taming the straight hairs. So far the gloss seems to have helped keep my beard in place. It didn't do anything for the hairs that aren't curly and stick straight out.

How do you tame your beard to prevent the fuzzy Grizzly Adams look? Do I just need to trim it (which I plan to do this evening to get everything a similar length)?

Just let that scruffy thing grow out long enough and it'll fall into place. A little hair conditioner helps also. I had a full beard for 18 years, and now I can say that I truly enjoy shaving every day.
