I am contemplating holding out for MVF or Union Square.

You are not gonna get much help on this one as opposite the camps are on them !!  Buy a tin of each, smoke 'em and then decide for yourself

Two completely different tobaccos.

FVF (aged sufficiently) is heavy, thick, dark & sweet.

US is diaphanous & subtle. If you're used to intensely-flavored tobaccos you'll probably ruin your pipe & kill yourself huffing it in an attempt to get the intensity level you're used to out of it. Which isn't in there to get out of it.

FVF is Pavarotti.

US is a beautiful woman speaking to you in a whisper.

I've smoked uncased Virginia tobaccos. It was very cigarette-like. What does Union Square do to address this? My question is genuine. I'm debating between MVF and US. It's a $30 splurge for me. otherwise I'll just play it safe and be happy with FVF.

My FVF is running low. OMG... :D

My FVF supply is reserved for contemplative imbibing. I do want to reflect on the smoke.

This post is directly proposed to Yak and Monbla. I respect your perspective.

Yuk summed it up quite well. Since you ALREADY ENJOY FVF and have stated why, it's a no brainer, you get a tin of US

Cigarettes are mostly Virginia tobacco.

They smell like Union Square.

My opinion is that MVF is one of the three truly great golden Va flakes, and the only one of the three that isn't cased with a detectable non-tobacco element. Spend the $9 on a tin of Golden Glow and answer the question for yourself. Union Square is good, but Cornell & Diehl simply don't have a Va in their inventory that can compete with Samuel Gawith's stock. For me MVF is on the same level as BBF and FVF quality-wise. It is an underappreciated and excellent Va.

who said anything about US being cased? I've never heard that before, and I surely wouldn't get that from smoking it.

Mea culpa. It was your "one of the three" that led me astray. Thought US was one of the antecedents.

no I like US but it isn't a favorite and I prefer Opening Night from that blender

Apples and oranges. Gawith Virginia is (mostly) African ; C&D is Old Belt Virginia (Virginia/N. Carolina).

To which I'd add that I feel C&D doesn't have a McClelland-quality Va crop in their warehouse.

Here we go again ! ALL tobacco's are cased, just not all tobacco's are Topped or flavored! GLP has discussed this before, both here and on his site.

I'm quite familiar with the distinction, having blown away hours of my life reading this here forum thing. Speaking for myself, I was using the term "cased" very loosely, as in "dicked with."

Translation : What you like is Virginia soaked over-full of sugar.

Everyone has an OPINION, and they should be expressed as such. Not having experienced first hand, how they process their blends I COULD NOT make that statement.

I thought GL Pease's Union Square had no casings or toppings. Here is the description from his website "Union Square is a blended sliced cake of high-grade flue cured leaf, from beautiful, sweet brights to deep, earthy reds, without the added sugars, sauces, flavourings and top-dressings common to many other VA flakes."

To me, that states there has been absolutly nothing added to the tobacco, no casings or toppings.

Brother Yak hit it on the head. Union Square is a much less intense VA experience. The "sweet spot" takes a little looking for. With FVF it's a much larger target.

I'm currently enjoying a jar of 5yo+ FVF and it can really do no wrong. I wish I had a little US to compare with it.
