If someone was to put up samples of tobacco in one pint wide mouth (Kerr or Ball) jars how much would one jar hold?

Oldbear

I find that the ounce measurement of the jars is a pretty accurate measure of how much you can fit into a jar. So a pint jar being 16oz will hold about a pound of tobacco. The half pint jars hold about 8oz or a half a pound of tobacco.

I mostly fill my jars with flake so I might not be getting quite as much as you *could* stuff into a jar. Shag cut could probably be compressed a bit more.

it depends on the cut, a shag or ribbon cut a pint would hold about 100 grams or 4 oz, an 8 oz holds about 50 grams or 2 oz

but if your talking about flakes or broken flakes it will hold a lot more, a 100gram tin of McC Christmas cheer fit into an 8 oz jar

Kinda depends like BigCasino have said. A lot can be stuffed into a jar but you don't leave room for air I don't think the tobacco will "age" or "mature" (depending on type) as much. I have about 300 grams of 6 tins of Solani ABF in a quart Mason jar and that leaves almost half of the jar for air. I stacked the flakes on end. One the other hand it took 2 quart jars for a pound of Butternut Burley (4Noggins).

If by samples you mean 4oz or less pints should be fine.

I guess the question is whether your just wanting to keep it fresh or letting it "work".

Merry Christmas....Mike

I use the 1/2 pint wide-mouth jars and find that I get up to 4 oz. in the jar if I pack the tobacco pretty tightly, depending on the cut of the tobacco.  Most tobaccos that come in 100 gm. tins fit well into the 1/2 pint jars.  I put flakes, plugs, or cakes into the 1/2 pints loosely.
While I've used the pint jars on occasion, I find that the tobacco on the lower part of the jar becomes a bit too dry once I re-open the jars & start consuming the contents.  This is much less pronounced with the 1/2 pint jars.

I see you smoke the same types of tobacco as I do and I find that 5oz of baccy fits just about perfect in a 500 ml widemouth mason jar. If it happens to be a little to much as I find the vendors I deal with allways seem to weigh to the heavy not light side. I just bag that up for instant use.

As others noted, it depends on the blend and how it's cut.

I use standard 8 oz. Ball canning jars exclusively. An 8 oz. can of Sutliff non-aromatics fills 3 jars leaving a good size sample to smoke right away. Of the blends I smoke, an 8 oz. jar holds about 2-3 ounces of tobacco on average.

I can get one 250g box of FVF into a widemouth pint jar. Same jar takes between 4-6oz of a ribbon cut mixture like Star of the East.
