How often do you go to the doctor?

So I just bought a second life insurance policy and while I was filling out the application it occurred to me that the last time I went to see "my doctor" was in 2008. I have been to the ER twice...once for stitches, the second for what was initially thought to be pancreatitis, but turned out to be a Pyloric Ulcer (cleared up with 30 days of meds).

I see my dentist twice a year as a matter of course, but I never felt the need to see my doctor unless I was actually sick.

Do most folks do the whole "well visit" thing, or only go to the doctor when you're sick?

I see the MD twice a year. He always asks when I am going to start exercising more. I ask him when he is going to start going to church a little more often. I lost 30 lbs between the last two visits - on the office scales and everything, so he was not so grouchy about the exercise.

PRICELESS!! :D

As young as I am I don't go unless I'm sick, although I can see the value in it. I try to take care of everything, so I would equate that to taking the car in for a tune up and oil change.

I go so often that my doctor's 3 children already have enough money in their college trust fund to pay for their education at Princeton or Yale. :(

My doctor's bedside manner is pretty abrupt and very direct. He is not a guy to worry about how things will be taken. He just says it. Some people complain about this, but I actually like it. There are not so many pleasantries, and he gets to the point.

He was being shadowed by an intern one time, and he steps in the examining room and starts in. I see the interns eyebrows go up.

On my last visit he said my hernia was not going to fix itself. He was tired of trying to refer me to a surgeon. He said he thought his strategy was going to be to tell me I could not lift anything heavier than a chalice, and my wife would make me get it done. This strategy is probably called holistic medicine or something, but he understands how to get results.

As a nurse, I recommend at least a yearly physical. I go once a year to see a family physician, unless i'm bleeding out the eyes, in which case i hit the ER or Urgent Care. So much can happen in a years time, and especially for us men over 35, a physical and a check on the ole prostate isn't a bad idea.

Key things to really look for if you are not the type to see the Fam MD are changes in a daily routine in your body. Foe example, If you always have been a once a day poop taker, and for the last so many weeks, have been off schedule, either more or less than usual, that's a good indicator you should follow up with a Dr. Same rule applies for women. I don't give medical advice but I will say "No I'm not a doctor, but i'll take a look"

:D

Because I'm Diabetic, a minimum of 4 times a year for HBA1C testing and then as needed .  When the right-wing finally accomplishes their goal of getting rid of Medicare and Medicaid and the ACA I won't be able to go to the Rx anymore

Technically I'm still a youngster but due to health issues I see my specialist every 6 weeks. I also have my A1C checked quarterly. Unfortunately the changes in the health care system are going to take a toll later as my insurance currently shells out over 8k a month just to keep me medicated and without meds I'm not getting more than 40 feet from my bed or a chair! If you're healthy though once a year for a check up should be plenty.

Should be going once a year but tend to just see my doctor when my medical exam is required to renew my class 1 drivers license every two years.
I do get into my oral hygenist for a cleaning and a scaling a min of two times a year and its a bonus that she has taken training and has the proper equipment for what to watch for with pipe smokers.

Reminds me of a buddy that was in his late fifties before he ever had a prostate exam. While he was getting his prostate checked the doc pulled his finger out and said this doesnt look good (Buddys name) there was blood on his glove. My friend looked back at him and said well Duh up untill 20 seconds ago I was a virgin.:lol!:

Annual physical and bloodwork for me. Need to do this in order to get my high blood pressure meds renewed.

Also see my Glaucoma specialist at least once/yr. Same thing.

Occasionally also see the primary care guy when I have to get some pre-cancerous skin eruptions removed from my forehead. He uses liquid Nitrogen and burns them off.

Also get an annual flu shot.

Had a bad bout with a gut condition a few yrs back, and ended up having to have Laproscopic surgery to remove adhesions to the upper bowel.

Apart from that I'm healthy as a fart!

:joker:

Cheers,

RR

Ounce a year for the blood work and the wellness visit. I stop by sometimes just to make sure the blood pressure is good.

Huh, despite it being well under control, I've had to go every 3 mo. for my bp meds (with 1 visit a year being a more general check up).  I haven't been for any other reason for 10 or 11 years

I just want the blame placed in the right place.

Politicians took your generations Social Security money and squandered it. Now all of our grandkids have to foot the bill.

Do some study of history, the conservatives have had it on the agenda for all of the above as well as SS since FDR made it law in '32 and LBJ did Medicare in '65. It's been on the "punch list" for a long time and they will succeed I'm sure. We are returning to the "good old days" or economic eugenics for a better term. Fine with me. Only those with the $s should have the goodeys !! I'll be dead when it finally happens so meh
