Okay, hoping this is the right place to post this (feel free to move if I'm incorrect, mods). Some time ago, I posted about a Peterson system pipe that gurgles like crazy once it's been smoking for a while. Since then, I've smoked it a few more times, and sought some advice around the pipe community. I am confident that it is due to the system well not being drilled deeply enough. I have considered picking up a tapered drill bit and boring it to a proper depth, but I am completely inept when it comes to this sort of work. My question is: to whom should i send this bugger to, to get this done? Any input/feedback is welcomed.

Walker briar works? I wouldn't think the chamber is tapered, but I could be wrong, but it doesn't look like it, is your pipe bent? or straight?

I wouldn't know who else to direct him to in the States Harry, as he is seeking the well to be deepened I would recommend getting a Professional to look at the pipe before anything drastic is done to it. If you know of a more reliable person to send the pipe to then that's awesome, doing something to the pipe himself could result in the pipes demise, that would be a horrible shame.

Thanks guys. The pipe is bent. A 303 to be precise. I originally thought to use a normal bit, but I'm uncertain as to the size. I completely agree that doing something myself would likely result in the pipe's demise, but I am at a bit of an impasse. I like everything about the pipe excluding the gurgle, and in he same turn- I hate having a pipe in my modest collection that I can't fully enjoy.

I have two "System" Pete's ( an older pre-Republic 302 and a newer 317 ) and based on the type of 'bac, way I'm smoking it and when I'm smoking it ( ambient temp, humidity etc.) I can get BOTH to gurgle. I'm not stating that you are not smoking correctly, but I would re-asses these factors BEFORE I sent the pipe off for modification. Peterson's been making the "System" pipes for a good while and from others I've seen, they have "it down" particularly since they invented it !  :)  JMHO

Ah right, no worries there then Buddy.   :sunny:

Would a picture be possible? If so, a picture of the tenon and mortise would be helpful.

Also, what are you smoking?

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I completely get where you're coming from Monbla. I've been convincing myself it's my fault since I bought the pipe, but the part that has me convinced is that it gurgles EVERY time. I smoke Vas and VaPers in it: always dried at least 30 minutes to one hour prior. The truly frustrating part is that it is my only pipe that gurgles and it's the one designed not to. The irony is not lost. David, I will take some pics as soon as I can(should be later this evening). Btw, on a completely different note: congratulations on the KC contest. I saw the magazine spread. Very well deserved recognition.

Sadly, no updates as yet. Time and weather have laid me low for the last few days. I did take photos of the mortise and tenon... I only hope they are good enough. Will be posting them this evening. I really do appreciate the help and input from all of you far handier than myself.

Hmmm. Yes, well keep yer butt warm. That's for certain.

Aside from honoring Maslow's hierarchy of needs I'd agree that Walker's (they actually have a gent doing all their stem work now...made me a special stem for a green pipe I did...sterling work) is the place to go for stem stuff. But this is a little different. Also, the structure is doing its job of condensing water out of the smoke...but having the chamber create a loud gurgle each and every smoke seems excessive, not to mention annoying. So if you've tried a blend known by you to be well dried out and the issue is still there I'd agree that somewhere in the geometry of the spitoon...er, the water trap...well, whatever...there's an issue.

Have you tried wrapping the stem with paper and inserting it into the mortise... So as to shorten how deeply it enters the water chamber? And smoking a bowl of something known to have caused gurgle before. (ie. testing to see if the end of the stem is too long)

So, getting water in the chamber is one thing. Having some part of the mortise or tenon "off" so that either the tenon is too long or the mortise is too shallow is something else. Maybe a bug crawled in their and died? Hmmm. Notice any new Lakelandesque nuances in the bowl? lol. Sorry.

Well, again good luck.

Finally got around to those pics. Sorry for the terrible shots/lighting. Aso, I know the inside of the mortise looks a bit cludgy in the photo, but I am at a loss as to why. After seeing the pic, I looked into it with a pen light, and it looks nowhere near as bad as the photo makes it out to be.

BH - Thanks for the feedback. I won't comment on the Lakeland front as lord knows what that will turn this thread into. The paper around the stem idea is fantastic; I will definitely give that a shot.

Thanks again to everyone.

Trifecta, I have a System 314 that gurgles.

I just chalked it up to it being a piece of crap. It still smokes okay, but it's far from being a favorite.
