I can tell you from professional experience that you'd need maple rather than oak for birdseye on that scale.
You know, I just typed that to be a smartass, but now that I think about it, maple would really work well for that. Tight grain, not prone to splitting, and nearly translucent. Time to go get me a lathe!

Seems like the cost of that lampshade would be absolutely exorbitant. I imagine that took quite a bit of time. Still, really cool stuff.
