For general purpose around the house/farm use I like a good old Buck Stockman, this thing really holds an edge, it ain't pretty but it's tough, I've had it about 20 years. For carrying in my pocket to work I carry a cheap Winchester made in China from Wal-Mart. I picked it up a couple of years ago for $5, guess I would rather loose a cheap one than a nice expensive one. It's comfortable for carrying with rounded edges and 2.75" when folded, even has a nice looking wood handle. It's good for opening envelopes, & cutting the tape on boxes, very light duty. It has to be sharpened 3 times to every one on the Buck. I also have a rather large folding hunter made by Buck that's sharp as a razor & holds an edge as well. You can't beat Buck IMO.

For day to day carrying around, I have a SOG Tomcat that I 've had since 1990 or so.
But for serious work, I prefer an 8 to 10" straight blade.
In that category I have old reliable, KABAR USMC # 1217 & a NextGen Fighter #1221. Have 2 SOG Fixed blades, a Trident I & a Tigershark
