Today our dumb ass governor signed a bill increasing the tax on a pack of cigarettess by 75 cents. Haven't heard if he increased the tax on pipe tobacco and cigars.

He stated that this will reduce the number of teenagers who buy cigarettes.
He forgot to mention that State law forbids the sale of tobacco products to anyone under the age of 21.

Oops, I forgot the rules of this thread that state the posts must be respectful of others.

I wonder if he has considered doubling the price of beer to prevent underage purchases and use?

Ain't it great to have Big Goverment around to make decisions for us and save us from ourselves :suspect: I have no idea how I've made it so long without their constant help :p FTRPLT

Yooper,

That's an interesting point.

In Wisconsin, less than 25% of the voting population smokes, conversely 147% of the voting population drinks beer.

The last beer tax increase was in 1969 and it went up to 6.5 cents per gallon.
Most of the State politicians were voted out of office.

I still remember the terrible "Beer Riots of '69"
Public transportation was shut down, schools closed, taverns were only operating on a 16 hour a day schedule, and several German immigrants tried unsucessfully to firebomb the State office building... no one told them that a Molotov cocktail made with Pabst won't ignite.

Several of the large local beer retailers had formed an investment group with plans to bootleg beer from a fleet of rented Liberian tankers that would be anchored out on Lake Michigan.

A few radical extremist groups had even threatened to poison the entire States water supply. ( They didn't care... they drank beer, cooked with it and probably bathed in it judging by their smell)

The end result was the cost for a case of beer went up to $3.69

Mike,

We have a faction of legislators that are trying to introduce a total ban on smoking. I don't think it will fly this time but it's coming. I am sure they will at least raise the taxes. After all NC in now the highest taxed state in the south east and quickly becoming one of the highest in the nation. We've been paying the 2nd highest gas prices in the nation for a while now because of it. The thing that is ironic about it is the state and all the counties are claiming we are in the worst finacial crisis since the great depression and no one knows where all that tax money is going.

JP....Don't go making me regret moving back to my home state (NC)!! I just read where some group in NC pushed for a "mileage used" tax last December!

Remember, politicians are like diapers. They need to be changed often...and for the same reasons!! FTRPLT

Good idea. Politicians seem to agree. But then never come up with a plan. It never passes because they want to change the other guy. Not themselves.

I wish they would do it like jury duty. Every two years, you replace 1/3 of the congress. They get paid a fair wage and a staff to help them. A place to live. Their old job is secure, that they will return to. They serve for 6 years. No powerful dynasty's are formed. Accommodations made for families. Eliminate Governmental matching funds for elections. In fact, only the Executive branch would have elections. It would reduce most of the wasted funds spent on elections now. They sit in their respective houses of government by lottery selection. Not by party affiliations. No aisle to separate the parties, or encourage a peanut gallery mentality.

I hate to tell you Fighter but it's getting a lot worse here and with the less than ethical push that Obama made for his constituents to vote a straight party ticket we ended up with the same good old boy crowd in the state senate being led by the new democrat governor Beverly Perdue to boot. Not to mention the ultra liberal nut Kay Hagan who by the way was a self proclaimed co-sponsor of SCHIP less than a month into office. They are proposing all kinds of new taxes.

I don't mean to sound like an old mystery story. However I have some questions that are a mystery to me. 1: How did all these politically unfriendly fellows get into office. 2: Is there no way to impress on them the majority consensus. 3: With National Socialism (um NAZIism) a growing cancer, ie gun laws, smoking bans, loss of parental rights, high unsubstantiated tax laws. 4: Whatever happened to good old "MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS" attitudes, seems like everyone wants to control everyone else. 5: Is nothing you do private does the rest of the world need to know.
Just some mysterious queries from an old fart who was born and raised in an era when a majority of these problems didn't exist.

Dave,

No mysteries. Same old points I've been bringing up all along! Most folks have just bought into the madness.

pipemaker,

I just noticed you're in West Allis, I was born and raised in Wauwatosa, just north of you!

Yooper,

I was born in Milwaukee and moved to West Allis 30 years ago.

At least you were smart enough to move out of Wisconsin.

Mike B.

pipemaker,

30 years ago was just about the time I moved from the city, 1979. I have two sons living in Milwaukee and I get there to visit from time to time. I'm amazed at the changes that have taken place!

UH?! Anybody heard of civil disobedience? Buy as much tobacco as you can afford NOW. Smoke in places you know it is VERBOBEN and dare them to call the cops for such a stupid thing (9 times out of 10 the 911 operator will tell them there is nothing the police can do). The next time you are in a public place with a woman that has so much perfume on that she smells like a French whore, make a horrible scene about it. Your rights are as important as anyone elses and you don't want to smell that stuff. Ask people (everyone you meet) why our 18 year olds can vote and die for this country but can't smoke or drink! Most of these idiots haven't even thought about it that deeply. Please stop complaining and get involved. !'m starting to feel like the Lone Ranger. My daddy told me the only way to beat an asshole was by being an even bigger asshole! You ladies ran me out of here once before because I told you all that you deserve this if you don't stand up against it, boldly, angrily and individually and tell people you don't care about their petty, unconstitutional laws and refuse to even acknowledge them. I for one will never succumb to this non-smoking non-sense. They can fine me if they like. I won't pay and I hope they try to take me to court. FOX news would love that one!! You know the stupid sign that has the cigarette with the red line through it? What does that have to do with pipes...or cigars? Come on guys!! Whining does nothing but make you look and feel weak. Get nasty on a few of these people that are violating your RIGHTS. It really feels good!!
