Decided to dip my toes in the Lakeland waters, so to speak.

Ordered a Gawith Hoggarth sampler of 2 oz each:

Kendal Flake
Dark Flake Scented
Rum Flake
Dark Flake Unscented
Brown Flake Scented
Kendal Dark




Also 2 tins each GH Balkan Mixture and Rattray's Dark Fragrant.

This should keep me busy for a while.

The shipment as a whole had a familiar smell I can't quite place.  Maybe a chewing tobacco from my youth?  Just can't figure it out.
 
Dark Flake scented definitely reminds me of Copenhagen.

shanez: Excellent haul brother! Dark Flake u/s has been a fave of mine for years, and now I’m hooked on the scented. Recently picked up some Rum Flake, and I find it to be good, but I have to be in the mood for it. Haven’t had Balkan Mixture in years, but used to enjoy it when I was in Englishes. Moral of the story is you really can’t go wrong with GH!

GeoffC: I have accumulated a decent amount of BBF#2 as well lately, and find myself going back to it more and more. Oddly enough my first encounter with it was a 10 year old vintage I bought from someone on another forum. I will be interested to pop one of the fresher tins or bulk that I have to compare, but the 10 yr old stuff is glorious.

One of, if not THE, most rewarding tobacco paths to be experienced. They may not all be for you, but an open mind and a fistful of Lakelands is a beautiful thing.

Oh nice to know it ages well! I enjoy BBF2 as a fairly easy and enjoyable smoke. Pretty good fresh! I look forward to an aged jar down the road.
 
I'm trying to pick which pipe to use for these. Is there a particular depth/width that is better or will any size do?
 
If lots of guys answer this you’ll likely get lots of different opinions.  That should tell you something.

IMHO: For the strong ones (Dark Flake) it’s wise to use a small bowl.  I like narrow and tall-ish.  For more normal lightly scented flakes like the Rum stuff, I like a standard Prince.  For the heavily scented flakes I like a Cob...whatever size you like.

I also like Falcons...any size bowl for any of the above...but small for the strong ones.

Lastly, no one has mentioned what to me is the “best of the best of the best”. (Sorry, MIB is on the tube right now). Give Broken Flake #7 a try.
 
Yes, Blackhorse is correct! No Lakeland journey is complete without sampling No 7 Broken Flake. It’s medium strength with a light top note of vanilla and the traditional Lakeland essence. If you ever feel like kicking it up a notch, add a little Dark Flake to it for a really strong but flavorful smoke!

This is only the third bowl I've smoked of anything since my stomach surgery at the beginning of January.  About a quarter way in and dang!  Very good stuff but it's kicking my butt!

Yeah that Dark Flake can certainly throw a knockout punch if you’re not careful! I like to smoke it after a big meal with a nice beverage on the side.
 
Flavor-wise it was great. Reminds me a little bit of a strong, spicy cigar. Maybe like a LFD double ligero?

This is going to be a good sitting around the campfire smoke!
 
Yeah you know your LFD double ligero comparison is spot on. Agreed that it is a great smoke around a campfire, especially when paired with a nice bourbon or scotch, or a barrel aged imperial stout.
