Has anyone here tried this stuff? I recently had a small sample of their Superior Navy Flake, and I liked it well enough that I"m probably going to grab a pound of it to throw in some Mason jars. I'm wondering if anyone's had SRS that can offer some thoughts.
 
I have not tried it but I have Westminster Superior Navy Flake I would like to part with. PM if interested.
 
I'm interested in any feedback anyone might have as well.

Escudo and Stokkebye's Bulls Eye Flake are represented heavily in my cellar.

Would love to hear anyone's comparison.
 
I found this .....

The Stokkebye brand is staying intact, as far as we know including the exact blends. The change is that the brand is now being distributed by the fine folks at Lane Limited. Villiger Cigars North America (fka Villiger-Stokkebye) has come out with a new line of pipe tobaccos called Newminster, and as you aptly notice there is more than a passing similarity to the old Stokkebye blends. While obviously there are some personal issues with the companies that went through a transition, the way we like to look at it is that the result of this is that we all have yet another great brand of tobacco to choose from! We’re pretty sure fans of Stokkebye will also enjoy the Newminster blends, and obviously neither Lane nor Villiger Cigars NA is going to put out an inferior product, so we are all the winners here. Of course nice timing on the post since we just added the Newminster blends to our site, so if anyone is curious you know who to call!

I bought 2oz of Luxury Bullseye and 1oz of the Newminster Superior Round Slices last week to compare. I can't say anything definite yet, but to me the Luxury Bullseye suits my palate a little better. The bowl of SRS had a lot of peppery flavour to it, which is not something I generally look for in a pipe tobacco.
 
I prefer the Stokkebye Bulls eye over the Newminster. Same thing with the LNF.

The Newminster Superior Round is more like the Mac Baren though not the same tobacco. Just more similar in character.
 
Here I am again, digging up old threads rather than posting new incarnations.............

I just played with some sent as a sample from a month ago, and I actually like this stuff.... A tasty smoke that's fun and easy to play with.....

From my TR comments:

This has been a very enjoyable smoke. The coins are sliced very thin, and they were easy to rub out. I got a medium strength Virginia flavor, with a pleasant spiciness from the Kentucky. This is a serious value, and on that basis alone it should probably get bumped to a 4. I found this very tasty and not a tobacco with a lot of complexity. You get the slightly sweet and mellow with just enough spice to notice but not overpower. I did not experience bitter as another reviewer did.

Edit: 12/1/14 I am checking reviews and updating. When I finished the 4 oz sample, I ordered a pound of this. I find this a very satisfying smoke, and have discovered I can rub out a couple of coins to mix with a "thin" Balkan/English to provide some body and kick it up a notch.

I have experimented with different ways to prepare this when smoked by itself, and I think I get the best smoke with the coins stacked, rolled up and wadded into the right size for the bowl. This gives a slightly denser pack and a remarkably good smoke.

This is a great blend to have in inventory. Solid 3.5 on the scale.

I smoked a half ounce sample from Smokingpipes.com and promptly bought a half pound to cellar. It's a tad rough around the edges, which I like, but I think it will age nicely and become more rich tasting with time.

I am a big time lover of Mac Baren Dark Twist Roll Cake, which has some things in common but S. Round Slices but can be had for a fraction of the cost, and since Mac Baren priced me out with their big price adjustment, I plan on aging some Round Slices instead to see if time gets me in the Roll Cake ballpark. :twisted: ;)

Took the words right out of my mouth......... Word for bloody word............. my half pound is enroute.......

 
SRS are good. It's earthy, meaty, weathered. Something I reach for when I just don't give a damn... and that's not a bad thing, at all!
 
Got my new tobaccos the other day. 4 oz. Newminster SRS included. I have sampled about 4 bowls in 2 different pipes so far. The description read mostly VA flavors with spice in the background. I get a lot more spice with this, and would like a bit more of the VA up front. Tend to agree with those who want to see the aged result. So I jarred the rest and we will see if my willpower holds out long enough to make a difference.... :suspect:
 
As soon as my order showed up I have been smoking nothing else. I'm really liking this stuff. Maybe it's a thing of having a new shiny toy, maybe not...............

I suppose I need to load up some Caliope's Choice for a change up this evening............
 
Now that I think about this, I did get some in my bombing awhile back. Can't remember much about it now though, but the jar is gone so I must've enjoyed it!

Digging up this thread again. I just received a couple ounces of Superior Round Slices with an order. This stuff is excellent and I only wish I'd discovered it a lot sooner. I have smoked a good deal of MacBaren Dark Twist Roll Cake and I've smoked MB Stockton. As Drums and Beer pointed out in his TR review, SRS sits pretty squarely between the two MacBaren blends, and I think it's better than both of them. A nice rich creamy virginia with just enough of that cavendished Kentucky to make it ever so slightly spicy and rich. Of the three SRS is, as Goldililocks would say, just right. True, it behaves nicely when you sip it slowly, which is my usual manner of smoking anyhow so it suits me. This one is a winner and I'll be buying a couple pounds to cellar.

SRS is Puff Daddy approved :afro:
 
Fr_Tom's review is dead on. Sorry I missed this but I'd like to add...

Whit as little as 6 months of aging this improves dramatically. It smooths out and gets a deeper rounder flavor.
 
Just recently tried this tobacco -- my question is do you just smoke the stem segments that are in the coins? Or should you separate them out?

It's quite mild and the stem pieces are not at all harsh, most likely because the entire rope is steamed. Just stack a few coins, rough them up a bit while keeping them held together and slide the whole thing in your pipe.
