I am completely horrible about opening tins, I always find something different I want to try so I buy them and try to wait until I finish off the tin I am working on, but I can't ever do it,, the anticipation of what is waiting inside that new tin, the not knowing if it will be my next "can't live with out" blend is just more than I can handle, So I try to hide them from myself in the corner cupboard, but, I know they are in there... and I have a tin of blackwoods sitting here on my desk, that Is going to be the next VA tin i open, but as I sit here and smoke some Villiger Early day, and think how good it is, makes me want to go rip into that cupboard , cause I know I have a tin of Villigers After Dinner in there awaiting to see the light of day.
I think this is why I prefer to buy blends in bulk, there is no guilt about popping that tin, and it's ok to grab a sample out and light it up when transferring it to a jar, like instant gratification.

I guess this explains why I have so many jars sitting around, and why my wife thinks I have fallen off the deep end

I can relate Harry.

There's something psychological about cracking a new tin rather than reaching for that bulk jar, even though a tin can be swiftly transferred to a jar upon opening.

This makes the case for smoking LESS variety of 'bacs !!    I have only 4 to 5 tinned 'bacs I like and a couple of bulk blends which go in jars so life is pretty simple smoking wise for me. But I've got over 40 years worth of smoking MANY blends so this helps as well as I'm a BIG practitioner of the KISS principle in my life

Harry, That problem used to plague me until the solution finally found its way into my thick skull. Whenever I want to open a tin of tobacco I just do it. I smoke a couple of bowls and put the rest into a 1/2 pint Mason jar, label it, and put it with the rest of my jarred stash. I figure it will improve with "age" and now I can open another one. Problem resolved.

When I sold all my pipe stuff ~2 years ago I had about 100 8 oz jars filled with tins that I hadn't finished. I had forgotten about some of them. Others made me think, good stuff; then why hadn't I finished it?

Tobacco is cheap, and we have a number of skilled blenders that keep issuing new stuff; and of course if it's new it is doubly attractive. Do you think you would as profligate if you lived in England or continental Europe with high taxes and/or VAT? That would change everything, I think; and sooner or later it will be here.

I try to remember this and that is why I buy them when I don't really need to open them and put them in the cupboard, but it doesn't help that they tempt me to open them, altho I know a few people think they are safer in jars then in tins
