James Herriot, a British veteranarian in the early 1900s, wrote the popular "All Creates Great and Small". Each chapter is a happy story of farmers and their animals and villagers and their pets. They are just the right length to read in bed before light out. Anyway, I just read this funny quote about a small holder farmer:
"Mr. Kay tapped out his pipe on his palm, mixed the sodden dottle with a few strands of villainous looking twist and crammed it back into the bowl."
So, gents, this is a "what not to do" in this pipe etiquette section of our pipe books, but what a picture! In your mind's eye you can see Mr. Kay's craggy, hard working hands, his industrious management of money, and the acrid smell of the "sodden dottle". . . What a great little sentence compliments of Mr. Herriot!
