Now that's the most original use of an old tin I've seen in ages. I would suggest that on bigger heavier pipes you might want to put something heavy in the bottom of the tin to keep it from tipping.

I like it. Here is an easy one they actually sell...

Even though you can make them out of a leather belt pretty easily.


And heres 's even quicker one I make out of old cereal boxes.

Just good to have here and there where you may pipe.

I like the one in the OP. I'll make one for my back porch smoking chair this summer I think. Ashtray and stand in one. Possibly even keep the tobacco in the can in a smaller container or baggie. I sometimes just leave all my accouterments out there through the day.
