Is there any kind of special consideration/steps one would need in order to ship/receive packages of tobacco from the US to Canada?
Also, is there a preferred method of shipping to limit the hassle of customs/taxes etc. ?

Request plain packaging.
Keep the size of the parcel down. Small is about equal to invisible. 4-6 x 50g tins is the limit.
Do not use a courier. USPS all the way.
USPS First Class International is fine. 2 week transit for me.
