Does the "current" Dunhill Royal Yacht have Tonquin in it?
I was thinking about give it a go and went to T.R. for the latest evals and someone mentioned that they thought it did.
If so, I'll not be buying the Dunhill's R.Yacht.

Thanks Guys,
Bill

Here's a list of all the flavorings added to the Dunhill tobaccos. No tonquin (or synonyms like tonka/coumarin) anywhere on the list.

BAT pipe tobacco flavorants.

I am not a scientist or chemist, so if there's some form of tonquin hiding on that list, I wouldn't know how to find it.

Thanks for the info Doc.
I believe that I'll test fire a couple of tins.

Thanks again
Bill

Royal Yacht is one of my favorites and have been smoking it for years and dont belive there is any tonquin in it. Get some and give it a try and let us know what you think.

Received 2ea. tins of "Royal Yacht".
I posted a short opinion which I deleted because I think it may have been affected by a wee bit of head cold that I have had.

Will update when all taste buds are firing in correct order. 8)

My most humble opinion of Royal Yacht.

Upon onening new tin: Some tobacco smell.

Tin moisture: Excellent

Packs well.

Toasting light: No promises made.

DTG: Where's the beef?

First half of bowl: Nasty burly taste...Marlboro Lights.

Last half of bowl: Empty and apologize to pipe.

It leaves a cigarette aftertaste.

Your tins must be off. I haven't tried any of the new release my tins are all from1998 to 2008 but when I smoked these new there was no burley taste of cig taste or smell and to me when a new tin is opened it smells great. Sorry you had such a bad experience. Why dont you p/m me your address and I will send you some to try. It will be from a newly opened tin from not sure of the year but it will be from 2008 or older. Give this a try and see if you think its the same. Enjoy your weekend.

OK -- I'll bite.

As nearly as I can tell, this is list of flavourings allowed in British tobaccos across the board. (The next list down on the drop down menu is presumably for British exports).

So how does tonquin get into some of the SG & GW stuff ?

Yak, I'm totaly ignorant on all of that line of thought, etc. I really enjoy most of the Lakeland flakes / blends however, I do not care for the "Tonaquin (sp). I had heard a rumor ref. Royal Yacht containing this additive...and was asking you folks that are more knowledegeble than I...which is very easy, as most qulify for that position albet unglorious. I did not taste any "tonyquinn"in that tin...I did smoke the whole tin, I'm not easyly dissuaded...it was really bad troughout.

Hmmm...this thread certainly raises some interesting questions.

First, do I understand correctly that the link to the list of ingredients Doc posted includes only those ingredients used by British American Tobacco (BAT) in its products sold in the UK? That's certainly what the listing seems to say.

If that's true, it wouldn't include any ingredients used by the Lakeland companies (GawHogg & SamGaw), which are still private companies as far as I know—not part of the BAT conglomerate. There are numerous scentings and natural essences known to be in Gawith Hoggarth and Samuel Gawith weedages that are absent from the BAT list. So, it's pretty clearly evident that the list simply doesn't cover the Lakeland products (...nor did Doc's post imply that it does, for the record).

Second, although BAT owns the rights to the Dunhill brand, they're apparently not actually doing the manufacturing of the current line of Dunhill pipeweedage. Rather, it appears that the manufacturer is (once again) Orlik, the Danish company that took over manufacturing of Dunweedage after Murray & Son of Belfast went belly up in 2004. According to a July 2010 article in PipesMagazine.com, the tobacco is made by Orlik in Denmark.

As for the flavoring in Royal Yacht, I found a post on TR.com that claims, "The actual casing used is a plum essence, NOT tonquin." ...er, OK—but I usually take most of what I read on TR.com with a few pounds of salt. Nonetheless, if the Royal Yacht flavoring is indeed plum essence, the list Doc posted covers it. "Plum juice/concentrate" is one of the flavourings on the BAT list.

All I know for certain is this: When I smoke Royal Yacht, I use a very small pipe. That stuff delivers a Nico-Buzz From Hell<img class="emojione" alt="™️" title=":tm:" title=":tm:" src="https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/emojione/assets/png/2122.png?v=2.2.7"/>!!

If you've ever smoked Ennerdale Flake...THAT'S the one that's loaded with tonquin. 1776 Flake also has a bit of the same flavor profile as I recall...but with 1776 the essence dissipated over time...half-life of 6 months. Tonquin...is described as being a flavor once used in something akin to chewing gum, before there was what we now know as chewing gum. A similar flavor to 'bubble gum' but not exactly the same. Think of your recollections of 'Bazooka Joe' pink bubble gum...that's very akin to the character of tonquin (IMHO). To me, 1771 Flake is a really good smoke...after it sits for about a year. My two cents, anyway.

Well, Royal Yacht, nor any other blend I've ever smoked, has reminded me one bit of Bazooka Joe' pink bubble gum. Thank Goodness!!

Blackhorse:

What is this "1776 Flake" of which you spake? Are you referring to the original PCCA Boston 1776 blend, or the more recent McClelland version by the same name? If it's the former, that was a Virginia flakeweed with a bit of Oriental. There was no tonquin essence added. I haven't smoked any of the recent McClelland version, which is reportedly a straight Virginia.

I'm wondering whether you might be referring to Samuel Gawith's 1792 Flake, (sold as Cob Flake in the UK), which is definitely a tonquin-infused flakeweed...also known as "Dead mouse in a tin", due to the powerfully funkoidal odor emitted by a freshly opened tin.

Anyhow, unless GawHogg has recently changed the formula for Ennerdale Flake, it contains no tonquin. It's composed of 86% Virginia from Brazil, Zimbabwe, and Malawi, with about 10% sun-cured Malawi leaf, and another 4% Malawi Burley. The primary scenting is almond, with some vanilla and other traditional Lakeland scentings in minor amounts. I've never detected any tonquin in Ennerdale, but my stash is from about 2002. Have they changed the recipe recently?

I do know that GawHogg had some quality control issues at one time. I once bought a pound of Ennerdale that was cased with some kind of cherry stuff. The vendor replaced it with the real thing, of course, but it was a definite screw-up at the GawHogg factory. On that basis, I suppose it's possible that you managed to glom onto a renegade batch that was tonquinified, but if so, it's mutant stuff. Traditionally, Ennerdale Flake is not supposed to have a tonquin aroma or flavor.

Oh yeah...1772. My bad.

My stash of Ennerdale is now about 6 years old and has lost most of its 'reek', but it still does. I too can look up the tobacco mix in the Gawith blends and often do when re-ordering, just as a reminder. And just cause they SAY that the scents are almond and other traditional British stuff (Geranium...fer Gawd's sake!) doesn't describe the final impact...which is intensly floral and sweet.

My recollection was that it contained tonquin...but again, I could be wrong, probably am...as Lou Costello said in several films..."I'm a baaaaad boy!".

Maybe it's a "less or no tonquin but lots more Geranium doesn't make it good" kinda thing (for me). lol
