Smoking a squat bowl

I have a hard time getting my more squat bowled pipes to not go out. Tobacco preparation is already taken into account (I have even tried smoking brittle tobacco to see if it could be kept lit, it was easier, but not by much).

Any hints or suggestions?

Is it just a short bowl or a very wide one as well? I find wider ones can be harder to keep burning evenly without relighting. They just require more attention is all. I also like to let the cake build more toward the botom of the bowl giving it a slight V-shape versus a straight U. This helps keep it burning evenly. Just a thought.

It's wide and short, basically like a cube.

I had never thought about tailoring the cake in such a way. Thanks MisterE.
