Kudos to the OP, I really enjoyed this subject. Like All Along The Watchtower it seems many covers exceed or define the creative genius.
As well as Hendrix, one of my other favorites is The Sundays cover of the Stones Wild Horses.

Speaking of All Along The Watchtower...

The proverbial candle in the wind, Michael burned out too soon for my liking.  :(

Huge fan of Michael Hedges. Saw him live 3 or 4 times and was always blown away. One concert Leo Kottke opened for him and they later played a duet on stage. Pure magic.

Very tragic his passing, and I still morn his loss.

Cheers,

RR

Thanks Bob and Sam, I am glad people are getting some good stuff out of this thread.

That Michael Hedges cover I have never heard before. Very well done!!! I will be looking up more from him.

Like Gonzo I usually don't care for remakes. Most of the ones I've heard are an insult to the original artist's work but I give credit where credit is due and The Sound of Silence remake by Disturbed is not only well done but I found it quite moving. The intensity of the message was powerful and captivating. In my opinion this has to be one of best remakes ever. I think it ranks right beside Whitney Huston's remake of Dolly Parton's I will Always Love You. :)

I have to disagree with the Whitney Huston remake of Dollies "I will Always Love You"
In fact I think she ruined it but, that's just my opinion.

Now for remakes I'd say one of the greatest is Pasty Cline's rendition of Don Gibson's "Sweet Dreams" and Willie Nelson's "Crazy"

I remember Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson when they did the VH1 storytellers album. Willie talks about the song "Crazy" and while he was probably joking made point the original title of it had been "Stupid" but didn't think it had the right sound so he changed it.
