Ok brothers, what is the fastest you had a pipe lit after finishing it on the bench? Should I let it "cure" for a time before it is fired up?

As long as your stain is dry, as well as your wood, I'd day it's safe to light it up right away. If you're cutting ebonite stems, they sometimes need some time to "air out" before the smell totally goes away.

I saw "Speed" in the DIY section and got a little concerned. "Dear DEA: Not what you think."

What Growley said. I stained, waxed and had the pipe (and stem) done on my last pipe and was trying it out an hour later. If you're using a thin coat of shellac or managed to get some stain in the bowl, some drying/bowl sanding might be a good idea after a day or two.
