Can anyone tell me what "Bench made" means on a Stanwell pipe. The other markings are Reg. No. 969 48, also there is a "63." possible shape number?

You have an old Stanwell.. Benchmade theoretically denotes 'Non machine made' .. ie Made at someones work bench. Of course that opens a new argument of just what is hand made and what is machine made.. You can safely call it a hand finished pipe.

The Reg Number is a bit muddier... Some claim discontinuation as late as early 80's some claim as early as 60's.. I go middle ground and say early mid 70's.. although thats just me not wanting to fight about it..

And yes, 63 is the shape number.. Kinda freehandy plateau top medium bowled number... Nice.

It means it's one of the best pipes you can smoke!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
