Amen, Brother! Been there, done that. The sign on the building even said 'Real Tobacco Pipes' too. Talk about pissed off...

I feel your pain, brothers. In my area of Chicago, there are about 12 shops that all claim to sell pipes, only one of which is an actual tobacconist.

Very common in NYC, I have leaned not to cross the street if I see one.

Yep, I agree,
I was with my 9 year old boy, in the BIG City, close to us, and had an hour to spare before my next account.
So, we drove up to the "Smoke Shop", got out, walked up to the door, and a sign says " If You arent old enough to buy tobacco products, you are not alowed in "
So , i tell the boy , to wait in the truck, I go in , and theres 5 glass counter cases, with glass pipes of all sorts. Seriously, there must have been over 500 pipes of that breed, maybe more.
Theres a little rack with 5 or 6 dr grabows pipes, and some pipe cleaners.

pffft!!!!!

It's true that getting worked up and let down by faux smoke shops is bothersome. However, I STILL make a point to check out ones I run across (plenty of head shops down here) because a little over a year ago I went into a very questionable waterpipe shop and found two dusty tins each of Samuel Gawith Full VA flake, Navy flake, and 1792 flake all for $10.95 each. The guy was so pleased that I wanted to take all those dusty old tins off his hands that I think he ended up giving them to me for $8 a piece and he even threw in a lighter 8)

Yeah, makes you feel kind of dirty and used. The last time I checked out one of those places, the salesman had the worst smokers cough I've heard in a long time. He could not stop hacking. I just wanted to leave.

I think it's more to the point that glass pipe shops are more popular than tobacco pipe shops, never mind the fact tobacco pipe shops might have been just as common some years back as these new "head shops" are now.

Typically, though, you can tell what shops are which. If there's an abstract chaos of glass pipes with oh-so pretty bare fluorescent bulbs delicately illuminating them in the front window, huge "NEWPORT" cigarette signs in the window and six flashing "OPEN-OPEN-OPEN" signs, it usually is signal enough for any of us to walk away--or at least lower our expectations: there might be some dusty treasures in there, as s.ireland points out!

Inasmuch as the common tobacconist may have turned into mini-mart peddler, the fishmonger has turned into a low-wage cellophane specialist in a huge supermarket and the cobbler has gone overseas to work in sweaty factories and involuntarily huffing glue.

Ah, it's nice to be turning into a cynical curmudgeon. *puff* :D

Worst thing for me is not enough stores in my area, second worse is the ones that are here are crack smoking overpriced

...yes, I forgot about crack pipes... light bulbs, the "roses in glass" so popular at convenience stores... I wonder if there's a bustling forum on those kind of pipes, too?

I wonder what would happen if you smoked Capt Black in a crack pipe, say, outside a police station. I wonder how long it's take them to notice you. All legal mind you....

I don't know about crack forums but there is quite a few for ciga-weed, I stumbled on a couple while searching for cleaning a tobacco pipe

I think the pot info availability regarding pipes is 1,000 times that of actual pipe tobacco. Don't quote me on exact numbers.

MisterE, in answer to your question, you'd probably earn yourself a 24 hour "investigatory detainment" for irritating the cops--also perfectly legal, and they'd be more than happy to hold you for that period of time just to make a point. :)

Otherwise, funny sentiment. 8)

I travel a lot and google most towns I'm in for "tobacco shops". 8 out of 10 hits are usually head shops, but sometimes I'll call on possibilities. Did that near Cornell University this past summer, the shop said yes they sell tobacco pipes. I drove over, walked through a nice pedestrian shopping mall. Sure enough, it was a head shop along with seven or eight others in this college town. It was a very nice evening, so I lit my pipe to walk around. A college aged girl came up to me and point out the signs that said "tobacco free zone" and that there was a $75 fine for smoking in that area. Unbelievable...

...head shops are okay, but outside "tobacco free zones" with a fine? Gimme a break...!

I have no moral issues with head shops and know they are a part of every college town/life, but to allow them but outlaw smoking outdoors is nuts.

I live near the WV state line. When I was in high school, the town across the Potomac River was a combined head shop, porn outlet and gunstore, they had it all...

I don't have any moral issues with head shops either--it's the morality of outdoor smoking being fined I question. 8)

Yeah but there is a small silver lining. I've been to a few of those shops that actually end up with real estate pipes and I think sometimes it seems they have no idea what they've got...I've seen some great deals that way. On the other hand, I also find it funny how some of those places actually sell new Dunhills at full retail and the best tobacco they sell is PA. Not that there is anything wrong with PA...
