I heard him on Austin City Limits and thought he was great.
Here are some examples:

I am a HUGE Tom Waits fan and have been for almost a quarter of a century. They guy is one of the most creative songwriters of our time. I love watching some of his early interviews and performances. If you want to hear a recent and very interesting interview with him, click here:

I find it interesting that this is posted in the Arts and Entertainment section and not the Music Hall. It's quite fitting. When you watch his live performances they are more like a stage play or musical than just a concert.

DITTO to everything you said! My wife and I are also huge fans since our school days in the mid eighties.

I know he has a huge fan base, but I still think he is grossly under appriciated. Probably always will be.

In fact, my wife is an artist and after 5 months is currently nearing completion of an homage to Tom in the form of a multi-medium "modern icon". I will post a link to her site once she finishes the piece and adds pics to the site. She has done similar pieces in honor of Elvis Costello, Johnny Cash, Peter Lori and others.

TW FTW!

Been a huge fan of his since the afternoon I heard "Step Right Up" on the radio in 1987. I was driving to a friend's apartment when it came on. I ran into his place frantically asking if anybody knew what this song was or who sang it. One of his roommates knew it. I think I bought half a dozen of his albums that night!

I've only managed to see him live once, which is a bummer. Hopefully again!

Thanks for the chain-jangle Bub! Just put some Waits on the speakers...

Doody.

Your wife is a woman of excellent tastes! I look forward to seeing Tommy and the rest.

The Black Rider is one of the most genius spectacles I've ever been witness to.

And Johnny Cash was alright, but Peter Lorre was a god...

I can see you think highly of Peter Lori. He was an incredible actor! I am too much the noob here for my log-in to allow me to post links BUT......, I'll try this.... www heidisanna com/artwork5 html ....I just put spaces where there should be DOTs.

Love him so hard it hurts. Caught him at the Fox in Atlanta a few years ago for this Glitter and Doom tour, and it was one of the best shows I've ever attended. Of awesome note, NPR has the audio from that concert free for the listening archived on their site: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=92916923

Pretty tidy actor, too--Renfield in Coppola's Dracula is a particular favorite role, as are his turns in Jim Jarmusch's brilliant Down By Law and the less-brilliant-but-still-fun Coffee and Cigarettes (opposite Iggy Pop!):

OMG, there's a Tom Waits thread??? Sorry, I know this is six months old, but I can't pass up the opportunity to gush over/ about Tom Waits. In fact, he was apparently just on the Simpsons. Here's Tom and Keith Richards singing Shenandoah.

Tom rotates in and out of my favorite musical artist of all time spot with two others. I just love the way the guy makes a mood, and then sings a story. One of the great treasures of my generation

yeah the tom waits channel on Pandora is pretty awesome, lots of Tom with some old blues and weird stuff thrown in. I was listening to the pandora waits channel and was introduced to a great band called firewater.

I was dealing with a bit of depression one day. I went to my local pub, the pike, and I put 7 Tom Waits songs in a row on the juke box. I am not lying when I say I cleared the place out. Which was fine by me, a bump and a beer with Tommy crooning about singapore, and I felt a little better

Big Time was a film I was lent when I was still in middle school, on some crappy VHS that had no cover or case. At the time, I was in the midst of David Lynch's Twin Peaks being on the airwaves, awaiting every episode, so I was no stranger to...strange. I couldn't stop watching it. I managed to find it in its entirety on YouTube. :D What a performance artist.
