My crude, homemade poker still smokes better than most of my other pipes, it is cooler and draws well.

So I tried adapting the wood stem to another pipe.
I bought a bitless pipe off of ebay and cut a mouthpiece out of a soft poplar.

It doesn't feel as nice in the hand as my poker, but it smokes well.

This suggests that the soft wood stem is acting as a filter, absorbing the moisture and cooling off the smoke.

It also qualifies as an entry in the ugly pipe contest.

I like it. However, looking at it, I see it as a Zulu like bowl, I do miss a subtle down turn of the stem. Which got me to thinking about an experiment. I wonder if you could make a steam box to make your stem pliable then put a subtle curve in it. Then of course dry it. I do like the pipe now and think it's already cool how you've made your stem. These are my winding thoughts. I just wonder.

It may have once had a bent mouthpiece, but that is why it was on ebay for $5. I just wanted to try the experiment. I may eventually do something else, such as a regular churchwarden or even go back to its original intended shape.

I will look up zulus.
