I have been a pipe smoker for 31 years and have tried many tobaccos over the years. I ended up smoking aeromatics almost all the time with a little burley in the rotation. While I still love the Boswell aeros, I have recently smoked Escudo and a local virginia blend and really enjoyed them. Virginias used to really burn the tongue. These two recent tobaccos don't burn at all. Did my mouth chemistry change or what. May someday I'll even give Latakia a try again.

In my experience that may very well be part of the reason. Another reason may be due to slower and improved smoking technique. When I was younger I smoked mostly burley blends...SWR to be more exact. As I've gotten older, the VAs and VA blends have become more of my go to smokes. And I have more time and take more time to better enjoy a smoke.
