    Some recent turnings

I know I haven't been on here in quite some time.  It's been at least 4 or 5 years since I've made a pipe.  I've been concentrating my efforts on bowl turning.  Anyway, below are some historical pics of pip es I've made and some other turnings on the lathe.  Hope you don't mind...

Another "not a pipe but still DIY"

Something I made for that "Zen" pipe smoking time where you want ultimate relaxation.  4" x 2" spalted maple oil candle.  Hope you like it!

Believe me, I'll make another pipe one day, but...

I've gotten into turning large stuff.  My most recent is a matching set of table lamps.  The bases are 11" tall, 5" diameter, made with ambrosia maple.  Hope you like 'em.  The first is finished.  The second still needs assembly.

Return of the Rainbow Poplar Burl

Well, the piece of Rainbow Poplar burl I posted back in January finally dried out and I had a chance to finish turn it. I used a friction polish on this one because I noticed (with Rainbow Poplar) that other finishes turn the purples more of a brown color. I wanted to keep all of the colors in...

VERY interesting wood - Rainbow Poplar Burl

Got this for a bowl to make.  Finally rough turned it this past weekend.  Thought you would like this... The bowl is 8-1/2" round by 2" deep. Compared to the bowl in hand, the photos definitely don't do it justice.

    Another vase.

10" tall by 4-1/2" diameter.  Very similar to the red cedar vase I posted some time ago, but we have a matching set (kind of) now. Finished with Myland's Friction Polish.

    Another non-pipe DIY project

8" x 4" Spalted Hawaiian Avocado bowl.  Rough turned back in September and finished this past weekend.  Hope you like it!

    Red Cedar vase

Since the description on this section says "and other DIY projects", figured I'd post something I've made since taking a long break from pipe making. Here's a vase I made not too long ago out of Eastern Red Cedar.  Was going to sell it, but the wife took immediate possession. Stands 9" tall...

Let me introduce you to my (new) little friend...

Stopped by Woodcraft's website today and saw they had the lathe I want on sale for !5% off and free shipping (today and tomorrow only).  Ran right up there to buy it.  In a couple weeks I'll be the proud owner of a shiny new Jet VS1221.  Can't wait!  Happy camper here! Oh yeah, it will be a...

    Decisions, Decisions...

So, I ordered a 6 x 6 x 3 piece of Olive Wood. Do I make a bowl with it? Or do I cut it up and make a minimum of six pipes out of it? Please help me decide! LOL, I think I know which way you will go!

Pipes arent the only thing you can make out of briar...

Had a block break off on the lathe some time ago rendering it useless for a pipe.  Made a bottle stopper with it today.

    Finished #24 - Danish Freehand

Finally got around to finishing this one over the past couple of days.  A couple of pits but not bad.

Smokey Pipe Stem Part II - A DEVASTATING BLOW!

Had an beautiful pipe going.  Stem was working out great! Sanding was going GREAT!  I thought, "This is going to be a beautiful pipe..."  My pour of the resin came out great.  Just how I wanted.  The black was really translucent and the white was solid.   Smoke was abounding throughout the...

    First Frog Morton

Well, I've been reading how many of you like the Frog Morton tobaccos and decided to give it a try.  My tin (Plain Frog Morton) was delivered today and I just went out and smoked my first bowl.  It definitely is an interesting tobacco.  I've been smoking a lot of McClelland Virginia #22...

    Smokey Pipe Stems

So I had an idea to have a pipe stem that looked like there was smoke in it.  To go from idea to reality I made the resin blank below.   The black is really translucent so you can see the white right through it. May turn out cool, may not. Guess we'll see on my next pipe. What do you think?
