I carry my pipes and cigars in my carry on, but butane lighters are not allowed to be carried in carry on luggage.

Lesepfeife, I think this is the type case you are looking for. I have 2 for when I fly.....
The Scot blood in me sent me looking to see if there were any other options. There are 2 other options on Ebay, one at a fair amount less and the other, more expensive.
For others who might also be interested in one of these:

When I went to copy this link I noticed that a number of the cheaper ones had been sold between last night and now so I ordered mine, which left only one available at that listing. Commonly for this type of thing the seller will relist another group but I didn't want to risk missing out on the good deal.

FWIW, I had a very bad experience with my Thunderbird. It would not regulate flame height consistently and would go from being too short to reach the tobacco to being so long it would scorch the rim of the pipe. I know they have a good warranty, but my experience was so frustrating I just went back to the traditional Zippo.

I did find that switching from the Colibri fluid (which I have used for years without any problem) to the Vector fluid was a small improvement. I think the Colibri is refined twice, while the Vector is refined five times.

There a couple threads going with the same discussion, but just so there is no confusion I wanted to note that you can indeed carry on a butane or fluid lighter, just not torch lighters. You are only permitted one in your carry on and it does not need to be in a protective case. If you have more than one, than it will need to be checked and it will need to be empty and in an approved case. TSA will likely search your bag if they see the lighter, just to confirm its not a torch so its probably a good idea to put it in the tray with your keys and cell phone.
