So our Anchorage Alderman sent me a loaner barge loaded deep with Tins of the finest snuff to sample and then return. All the Fribourd & Treyer blends, a number of Wilson items and others.

I thought it would be fun to post a series of brief impressions on the ones I try...a running series of blatherings from a complete newbie. 

Add your own impressions as they apply.

So what did I try...

1. F&T High Dry Toast. Never having had a toast before I thought this would be more potent. The tin aroma was lovely though light. The powder more fine/dry than I'd had prior...but I got it up there OK. Again, light and subtle in flavor. Very nice, but different than expected.

2. Wilson's of Sharrow Grand Cairo. In the neighborhood of the few SP's I've tried, but far more so. An initial blast of aroma, a slight burn soon gone, a very nice fragrance. This will surely be on my order list. Excellent in all regards.

3. F&T Santo Domingo. KaBoom! An explosion of wonderfulness! Deep...dark forest soil...wet cedars...spices...significant N hit, slow to fade. Now THIS is what I thought snuff was meant to be. Amazing. Wonderful. Damp, heavy. Easy to sniff. Did I mention I liked it?

Other blends will be added via edits as they are tried.
 
Santo Domingo, sounds good. I'll put that on the list for my next order.
 
I don't do the stuff.. Tried and it's just not for me... But one I did try was the High Dry Toast. IIRC it was my fave of the bunch with a natural tobacco flavor? (If flavor is even the right descriptor)


Oh and good on the Alaskan for treating you well. He's another one that doesn't get thanked enough around here for all the crazy crap he pulls.
 
Lol. Somehow I doubt that... But I spoke the truth anyway. I ain't ashamed to say it, you are a semi-tolerable guy. :p

Ahhhhh, Santo Domingo.

I love the stuff - for me it's become one of those "I don't want it all-day-every-day snuffs, but when I want it, I REALLY WANT IT and nothing else will do." I find that it runs a bit contrary to most other snuffs in that it's tin note is MUCH more aggressive than when it's up in the schnoz.
 
Enchanto Domingo. Peaty Rain Forest Wondersnuff. Might even be a few Truffles in there! Made by Wood Elves in deep dark Mirkwood and imbued by the Wizard Gandalf with...uh, well...that might be a little much. It's just that, "Yeah, that's pretty good." just didn't seem to be right.


Anyone know of anything similar out there?
 
Santo Domingo is one of my favorites. I like the earthly, almost stable like smell. I swear I can smell leather tack.

If you ever buy a tin, be sure to transfer the contents to a jar. The tin can rust out due to the moisture content.
 
Additional blend trials:

4. Wilson Sharrow Gold Label. Very nice SP flavors. Mild. Easy to use. A winner, perhaps esp to start the day. (The tin Fat Man gifted me is, I'm guessing, an older tin. The label is not the design being shipped currently. Mine still had the sealing tape around the edge - and was rich and potent when opened...much more so than his opened tin. These things fade quickly I gather, if not kept in a sealed container immediately upon opening. I'm working on that now.)

5. Wilson's Tom Buck. Another very highly regarded SP style snuff. My first tin scent of this made me think it would be super potent, but it proved more mellow. Again, very fine experience. 

Note: what little research I've done indicates that of the Wilson's of Sharrow SP blends pretty much everyone out there picks the Grand Cairo, Gold Label and/or Tom Buck as their first, second or third favorite...very frequently naming the trio as their top 3 favorite blends. High praise. From just initial impressions I'd go Grand Cairo, Gold Label and Tom Buck, in that order. Just sayin'.

3. SPs- SP stands for Spanish and harkens back to the way snuff first came to Europe. These snuffs tend to be flavored with Bergamot and/or other citrus flavors. They represent some of the most popular and skillful blends in the snuff world and are often a snuffer’s all day or go to snuff. Examples

Thanks for the offer but between the Bernard Schmalzer's and the Viking Dark, I have more enchanted fairy forests than I can possibly fit in my nose at the moment.

I will however pencil in "Enchanto Domingo" for the next, albeit far off in the distant-future purchase.. :p

Anyway, here's another trial:

6. Fribourg & Treyer Princes. Another dark, coarse, damp snuff (looks like Santo Domingo). Very easy to work. Good initial sting. No forestry here...this is a subtle, light floral character. Somewhat smokey. Obviously a refined item. Nice Nic hit. The moist, coarse texture make this a winner for me. Being a newbie, I'm embracing anything that helps me re control and not getting the stuff in/up/back (whatever) too far. You don't want to get these further back than you can stick your finger, I guess. Way up front is key. Easy does it. I read somewhere that doing a big inhale just prior to snuffing and holding it in during snuffing helps you to not snort it down to your toes, um, etc. But things are working out OK, I think.

Recommending a dark brown or black hankie.
 
Roger on the hankie. I have black and gray hankerchiefs.

Another trick for the moist snuffs is to sniff (snort, snoot) and then press your nostril closed. Sometimes the moist (heavier) snuffs like to ride the gravity train. Nostril pressing stops the train.
