I really enjoyed the "Gunfight " thread so that got me thinking about my favorite
sword fight. Mine would have to be the climatic scene in Rob Roy, a great movie with an amazing ending...

Excellent Sword fight in Rob Roy and a beautiful rendering of the legend of Rob Roy, versus the historical Rob Roy.

A completely different take and maybe Tom Cruise's finest work, brilliant sword play throughout, a moving story. This film really gave Tom a dramatic workout, not his usual 'pretty boy' role at all, about an absolute monster of a man, made so by circumstance; deeply conflicted, coming to terms with who he really is.

A small taste:

When I think "Hollywood swordfight," I immediately think The Princess Bride.

And of course, that style of swordplay owes a hue debt to all the Errol Flynn swashbucklers of 30s and 40s... Captain Blood and The Sea Hawk are two of the best.

That's the one I immediately thought of for this thread.

So if we combine this "favorite sword fight scene" with the similar thread that I think started this one, "favorite gun fight movies" we come up with Raiders of the Lost Ark?

I loved the swordplay in the movie "Gladiator",so many good scenes. The
end scene where Maximus kills the evil emperor was excellent. Thanks for posting all the good swordplay.
Basil Rathbone was quite the swordsman,here's a quote from the web;

He is considered the greatest swordsman in Hollywood history, superior even to on-screen foes Errol Flynn and Tyrone Power. However, because he was so frequently cast as the villain, he won only one on-screen duel in his career - as Tybalt in Romeo and Juliet (1936) - for which he earned an Oscar nomination. His last, filmed when the actor was 63, was with _Danny Kaye_ in The Court Jester (1955). It is considered by some the best sword fight ever filmed.

Winslow :sunny:

Troy with Brad Pitt had a bunch of great scenes but the first one was the best. You can hardly call it a sword fight because it's so quick but I just love the scene.

yup, that's what I meant.
Being on dial up I don't do utube, I can go and rent the movie and watch half of it or maybe all of it sooner that i can download that little 4 minute clip.

Oh for affordable high-speed (just outside of the range of anything but a satellite hook-up, until they build a slightly higher tower around here, then wireless hoorah).

Most of my favourite sword fights are send ups, one way or another. Like Cyrano dueling while composing a poem about the death of his young opponent.

Would the Jedis' "sword fights" with their metal weapons that issue the lethal rays be considered part of this thread? Many engrossing "sword fights" in the Star Wars series.

I think they would count seeing as how the are still a "sabre"

I happened to enjoy the sword fights in Lord of the Rings the two towers at helm's deep. I feel however that the axe work by Gimli left something to be desired.

Wasn't there a sword fight between Catherine Zetta Jones and some one else that was a touch erotic ;)
