That's where I am now, at least. I seem to jump around quite a bit, but Seatac Airport appears to be my usual entry/exit point in the US, so I tend to wind up here when I don't need to be anywhere else.

I'm new to pipes. I only started at the beginning of the year. Before that, I was into cigars. I still am; I'm just currently devoting most of my attention to pipes. I imagine it will even out in the future.

I've been trying out briars and cobs, and had good luck with both. I'm still on the inexpensive end of the spectrum when it comes to pipes. Slightly less so when it comes to tobacco. I suppose I have to credit the fact that I find my pipe smoking sessions so enjoyable, I haven't felt much impetus to really start spending, yet.

With many of my hobbies, I find that I enjoy reading about the hobby as much as practicing it, so I'm looking forward to finding my way around here.

I'm also in the greater Puget Sound area, albeit a little east in the Cascade foothills.

This is a great site, full of helpful info and experienced members to help you on your journey.

Me, I'm only a novice but do enjoy my pipe and am learning thanks to all the folks around these parts.

Have you had a chance to try Carter Hall OTC tobacco yet? - inexpensive and quite pleasurable!

Brewdude, I'll be back for sure, and am looking forward to making a post or two, even. I was just up to a part of those foothills this weekend, if Snoqualmie counts. I went to the casino, and enjoyed their pleasant restaurant and cigar lounge.

CarterHallJunkie, I have not yet had the pleasure, but with your recommendation, I think I will include some in my next tobacco purchase or two.

Just to clarify, an over-the-counter tobacco is different from both the tins and the loose mixtures that many stores keep in those large, glass jars? If that is correct, I've so far only had one OTC tobacco, which is Red Cap Regular. I've had some decent luck with it, though the last time I smoked it (in a cob) it was a little, I don't know how to describe it, dry and sharp? If it keeps up like that, I'm thinking of maybe mixing it with one of my small selection of other tobaccos.

Natch, I'll do my best to share my questions and observations.

Yes - the OTC tobaccos have long been called "drug store tobacco" because that was the usual place that you could find them.

I get my Carter Hall from a local discount cigg place or the local supermarket.

You bet it counts - that's where my brewery is! Snoqualmie Falls Brewing, right in town on the river. You were about 5 min away if you were at the casino.

Next time you're in the area pm me and we'll have a smoke on the loading dock.

Welcome, Nicholas....Ahhhhhh: Puget Sound !! Coffee haven, beer mecca, crabs, etc., etc. Great area!!!!!!!!!!!!
 
I'm pretty fond of the region, myself! Not a bad place to wind up, at all. Everything you mentioned is true, though with the proviso that the prominence of the seafood lessens exponentially as you move away from the water. In fact, if you're out of sight of the Sound, your choices often consist of shrimp, salmon, halibut...and clam chowder on Fridays.

The three consumables I've noticed you can reliably find here are: espresso (of course), Caesar salads, and Thai food. The ubiquity of Thai food seems to be lessening somewhat these days, but when I was in the area in the '90s, it seemed that every block sported a Thai restaurant.

I can definitely confirm rumors of having two Starbucks in the same shopping mall, and even the same city block--in Bellevue, there's a Starbucks on either side of a bus terminal--though I suppose I should naively ask if this doesn't in fact happen everywhere.


Now what's hard to find are very many tobacconists that will take care of pipe smokers! I went to three places yesterday in search of the Carter Hall that I promised I would try, and came up empty every time! The places I looked up to when I was exclusively a cigar smoker have become tarnished in my eyes. . . .

There is, however, a very nice store in downtown Bellevue that seems to cater to pipe smokers. I'll certainly mention them again later, once I reliably confirm the name of the shop. I'm thinking of heading there today, if my schedule allows for it.
 
Nicholas: Stop by the Kirsten Shop at Fishermen's Terminal on Salmon Bay near Ballard. Reasonably good selection of tobaccos and pipes, as well as the famous Kirsten system pipes of course. They also have a downtown shop, but I have never been there and do not know if they have a decent stock of pipes and tobaccos.
 
Nicholas: I completely feel you on the hard time you've had finding Carter Hall - getting harder to find all the time it seems.

Not a good sign for a junkie like me :bom:
