Ah well, as long as both your testicles are still in tact, you're OK.

Search here on BOB and you should see many of my posts lauding Mr. du Toit and his wonderful pipes! I own around a dozen of his pipes and all of them smoke like machines! I'm proud to call Jean a friend. A very generous and humble man indeed!

Love this testimonial on his site:

"Jean,
As you said.....'the briar is as good as it gets!' The flaws on the pipe give it character, and prevent the pipe from shifting around in my hands."

Bear in mind, Jean and the other pipe carvers in RSA, have limited sources to obtain their briar. The don't necessarily have the luxury of just chucking a block if it doesn't have 100% perfect grain. They work with what they get. In my opinion, they do very well considering what they have to deal with. I'm sure if someone wanted a "perfect" grained pipe, I'm sure they can oblige, provided the buyer is willing to wait for the right block to show up.......

Why would it be different from anywhere else?

But that's neither here nor there.  I took the quote as meant to be amusing, and continue to think so.  The fact that he left it on his site shows a man of superior wit.  It's the "...flaws on the pipe give it character, and prevent the pipe from shifting around in my hands" that gets me. What the hell kind of flaws does that suggest?!

Further explanation would be...silly.

I stopped by his website and love what I see. I also signed up to see when he gets new pipes in. Reasonable prices too! Maybe I can snag one in the future. My PAD knows no bounds (except finances). So, I will have to wait till I save up to be able to afford one.

I can't speak for Jean du Toit but Charl Goussard is a friend of mine and I see him regularly. We talk pipes all the time!

He's got no problem to get hold of super fine briar. He orders his stuff from an Italian supplier, same as a lot of other carvers all over the world.

Both Jean and Charl turn out some sandblasted and rusticated pipes, same as other carvers. The bulldog Charl made me for my 70th birthday had some small pits in the briar. We decided together that he will blast it and then leave it "naked". Wish you can see this pipe, hold it in your hand and appreciate what he's done.

So both Jean and Charl must sandblast and/or rusticate some of their makings, same as all the other carvers form all over the world. But they do not have a shortage of briar at all.

Good news! The pipe arrived safely

Sad news! I may only have it on Christmas morning :(

Thanks for the pipe porn.

Gorgeous pipe. Love everything about it.

Another 35 days of waiting before I will have this beauty in my hands :(

I'm also waiting for a new Mastro de Paja and 2 estate pipes which are sitting at customs in Johannesburg. Postal strike is still in full force.

I went to the postal depot in Cape Town yesterday and got hold of my Escudo which has been sitting there since June. But I still have enough of that baccy, it's the pipes I want!

I've been told that, should they start working on the back lock today, it will take until Christmas to have everything sorted out. They did not tell me which Christmas though

I've been smoking this pipe now for 4 days and it's a champion :D

I likes ESCUDO

Still waiting for my new Mastro de Paja and a new Golden Gate bulldog. Bidding on yet another old Parker as well.
