One of my neighbors did a hitch in the Peace Corps on Vanuatu and made a pipe much the same way, though he made a push-in stem with a separate piece of wood, like some old cobs. Of course, all he had to smoke was Borkum Riff Whiskey, but you can't expect a big selection when there's only one store and you're in the middle of the South Pacific.
