I've been watching too much Masterpiece Theater. Looking for some conversation about traditional British hunting garb. Any good message boards or online vintage stores for this kind of thing (other than eBay)?

Also looking for a wool tweed or herringbone full Norfolk shooting jacket in a size 40. I like the 4-button style, but 3-button would also do. If anyone is holding, or knows of a store holding, please contact me.

Styleforum.net - Check out the forums, do a search there for tweed, watch the classified ads there. Make sure you get measured correctly. For a traditional Brit fit hunting jacket you want to look for a three button coat with dual vents, the traditonal American sportcoat will be a two button coat. Ebay search for Harris Tweed will turn up lots of jackets ;)

If you want "...traditional British hunting garb" you need to get a red riding coat, white breeches and tan topped riding boots :p "Hunting" in Britain is riding to Hounds on horseback. "Shooting" is when one goes out with shotguns shooting driven grouse etc. They also "shoot" deer up in Scotland with rifles as we do. :p

I won't be hunting. I don't hunt. I come from a hunting family, though. I enjoy taking the dogs (only one dog at the moment) into the field to watch them work and play. I'm not interested in such a jacket so I can stroll the streets of a city with the hopes someone will take a photo of me for Archival Clothing blog, but I won't necessarily be using it for its traditional purpose, either.

For a full Norfolk that's decent quality, you'll be paying a lot of money and will likely have to order it from a specialist tailor.
You can get knock offs on ebay and through a few online clothing retailers but they won't fit as well nor hold up as well.
If you go to http://www.harristweedshop.com/jacket-norfolk.html you can get their version of it which is good and , in my opinion, worth the money. (But then, I'm a Scot so I would say that.)

Also, try searching for 'Vintage Shooting Jacket Tweet' and similar things on Ebay. You may get lucky.

Bear in mind, it is very bad form to get a shooting jacket that is obviously new and in good repair that has leather patches on it. The leather patches you see on many shooting jackets come from the fact that they were worn so much that those areas got worn down. If you're seen by 'those in the know' wearing a new jacket that has leather patches on it you'll be seen as something of a poseur.

I never did care for leather elbows or shoulder patches. I wouldn't have those on any jacket by choice.
