How do Olive wood and Morta compare to Briar as far as smoking qualities, such as adding any odd flavoring to the smoke, and also as far as durability - resistance to burnthrough or charring, resistance to breakage from dropping and the like?

thank you,

Paul

I have two olive pipes and both smoke as well as briar. Durability is not an issue as it would appear that olive is every bit as tough as briar.

Their grain is different from and as interesting, in their own way, as briar.

Olive and briar both smoke well and present there own unique character, try them with different blends and enjoy, John.

I have two Il Duca bulldogs of similar size and shape, one is briar, the other is carved from morta. The differences are slight, but having smoked the same blend in both, I would say the morta presents a more subtle, or "lean" flavor than the briar, if that makes any sense. In other words, the briar tends to have a richer, fuller flavor, and the morta has a drier, and more detailed taste in my experience.

I think, on that note, Harlock, exactly what I'd end up smoking more in a morta... stuff I really wanted to pick apart flavor-wise. That, and anything it tended to "find" or focus on in the mix that a briar might pick up too much "tobacco noise" on...

I can't speak for olive wood, but morta is great for English blends IMHO. I have a morta apple that James Gilliam made who can be found here on BOB. The first three or four smokes were interesting. Kind of swampy. Subtle enough that I actually enjoy it. It mellowed and is in my regular rotation. I smoke some of my heavier latakia blends in it. I still prefer briar over morta, but I love my morta pipe.

I love my olive wood pipes. I have found that they do smoke as good or better than many of my briars. Some people have claimed that they imparted an olive oil type taste to some of the tobaccos. I have not found that to be the case. Plus, as stated earlier, I love the grains that appear in Olive wood. They are quite stunning. Smokey in nature and character. If interested, you might want to check out Abi Natur. He is a heck of a guy who makes stunning Olive wood pipes from trees on his own family land. Canaan pipes is his brand. http://www.canaanpipes.com/ I have pictures of the pipe he made posted in a thread on here. I think you can look it up to see if interested.

He is the nicest guy.

I am looking forward to buying a morta to try. I have another thread on here that discusses Morta as well.

Pipe makers and smokers nice guys? Get outta here.  :rabbit: :rabbit:

Good link to Abi, I have always wanted to try other alternatives to briar, morta and olive wood are no exception--plus, the different look is stunning in most cases. 8) Abi's pipes are weird and wild... just what I like!!!

I don't see any prices on the site.
He is definitely losing sales.
I, for one, am too lazy to ask
what each pipe costs.
They're on there, you just have to click "Continue reading [pipe name]" and it goes into a more detailed page... like this beaut that apparently was inspired by an asteroid... http://www.canaanpipes.com/cp-bruyere/apofis It's Eur / $350 8) (and a great choice for BoB Secret Santa for me... :lol!: :lol!: :lol!: ) 8)

Yeah I noticed that... not really sure why people do that... I'm usually too lazy or assume "...oh it's THAT much, eh..." it isn't a good sales method to my reckoning.

I tend to agree about asking what a pipe costs, but I can say that in my case, It was worth asking. There were no pipes in my price range listed on the site. A couple of emails later and Abi made it work, fitting a pipe into what I had to spend.

Just saying

I'd love to try an olive pipe, but I'm still waiting to see one in a shape I find appealing. The shapes I've seen leave a lot to be desired. I wonder why it demands the shapes it does. I see a consistency across carvers, and it just isn't my thing.

I agree, the shapes do tend to have an "artsy" quality. Many are none traditional. Why don't you look into having one commissioned? Get a great looking pipe of your own design?

Aside from simple laziness, it creates an extra step
and a "waiting period" while you wait for an answer.
That also pours cold water on "impulse" buys.
I can't think of any good reason not to list prices.

There are lots of pipes to want to buy. There are lots of talented carvers. There are lots of other things I desire to own as well. When I don't see prices listed, I leave and tend to not give it a second thought. Don't make me jump through hoops to spend my hard-earned cash with you, because I'll just go somewhere else. Simple, really. Life is full of games, and I'm not looking for another.
