I'm a Star of the East junkie, and love C&D's offerings, especially on the Latakia front. A while back I came into a couple of pounds of C&D's 970P Pirate Kake. Loved it so much I ordered me up a few additional pounds. Cheap. Comes as a large pressed brick. No Virginia's in this one at all. Just Latakia at 70%, Turkish and Cavendish Burley. No campfire or burning rubber here. Just a real deeply nuanced flavorful smoke. Just curious what my Briar Brother's here think of this flavorful weed.

I always have some on hand.

Wife likes it too (shock)...says it reminds her of incense in church. ???
Who am I to argue with her?

I'd say the incense note is spot on. To me, Pirate Kake has a very exotic taste and aroma from such a substantial dose of latakia and turkish. I also love how full bodied Pirate Kake is, the smoke is so concentrated and dense. I've been smoking a lot of Pirate Kake for the past couple of months since exhaling through my nose has started messing with my sinuses. It is so grandiose in flavor that I don't need to exhale it out of my nose in order to get the full oriental sensation. The pressed format is awesome, not only does it marry the components into a perfect consistant harmony, it also makes storing large amounts of it a breeze!

..did I mention that I kinda like Pirate Kake? :pirate:

Really!?! Mine too, anything with a high dose of Latakia. I always thought she was nuts, but who am I to argue.

I get nothing but compliments when I smoke Latakia in public. It shocks me, because of what negative reactions I hear around here from their wives/families/friends when they smoke the stuff.

Pirate Kake? It's alright. C&D has some of the best Cyprian Latakia in my book, but I am more partial to Ten Russians if I'm REALLY in a Latakia mood, Star of the East if I want a complex, dynamic-but-strong strong Latakia, and Billy Budd if I want a direct, meaty smoke. Pirate Kake is a two-chord strum for me, and the others are concertos, ballads and rock'n'roll.

Which reminds me, I need to concentrate more into Greg Pease's Latakia blends...I've been so enamored with his work with Virginia, I forget sometimes he gets his Cyprian Latweed from C&D, too, so...perhaps you should try GLP's Westminster, Blackpoint or Odyssey, Kash. Not to distract you from Pirate Kake.

Along with SOTE, Westminster, Blackpoint & Odyssey are my mainstays. And how can we forget, Charing Cross, of course.

I like pirate cake, but I like engine99 better, not the pressed engine99 the broken flake, SOTE I think is the "Star" of the threee

For a full Latakia blend, Odyssey is what floats my boat.
+1 on that thought. But there are so many fine lat blends available today that as I love variety, it's hard to pick a single blend to dwell upon.

Well, Engine 99 IS around 1/2 Pirate Kake (unpressed) and 1/2 Red Odessa. Hard to go wrong there.

I like SOTE but after a couple of bowls it leaves my mouth kinda pasted- have to brush my teeth AND tongue immediately or the aftertaste lingers unpleasantly for hours. But that's just me, I'm sure.

Here's C&D's little family of related blends -

970P Pirate Kake (Pressed only) A smooth, robust blend with LOTS of exceptional Latakia accompanied by Turkish and cavendish cut Burley. A blend for the Latakia lover.

968 Odessa Cavendish cut burley, Turkish, Latakia and Perique. Similar to the old Balkan Sobranie White.

968R Red Odessa The same blend as #968 with red Virginia substituted for the Cavendish cut burley.

099 Engine #99 This is a full English blend -- a combination of #968R and #970.

968A Orient Express 1/2 #968 and 1/2 #970 (unpressed). Designed to lessen the Latakia content of #970, but still a robust blend.

Kashmir, thanks for posting this. I have not sampled Pirate Kake as of yet, but it has been on my list of pressed Lat blends that I want to cellar.

...precisely the reason why I haven't dialed-in my GLP Latakia at all. :| I like Latakia, but I have so much good stuff on hand, it's hard to commit to something new and unknown once I'm on a roll with a particular mixture.

First world problems!

You know, I always wondered if Star of the East belonged in this family of blends given its old Oriental RR Line/Train name which most of these have.

Agreed. There are some excellent mixtures on the market. Some of my favorites are pretty reasonable and a couple are decent bulk buys.

I just ordered some Pirate Kake & GrampaGrossbart & I just exchanged a few samples. One he sent me was a chuck of Ten Russians. 8)

You may have a point there Aristokles about SOTE. I've also thrown in Camp Fire as it also has similarities.

066 Star of the East. One half Latakia with a generous portion of Turkish and sweetened with stoved red Virginia.

064 Mountain Camp. The same tobaccos as #063 (063 Bayou Night) with the proportions of Perique and Latakia exchanged, making this a heavy Latakia blend for the English smoker.
