I'm gonna have to pick some of those up, if not for my pipes, I'm sure I can find something else to polish around the house and neighbourhood, pipe smoker by day, good deed metal polisher by night.

Nothing wrong with that. It did have a nice patina to it. I do prefer having it clean and shiny, though. :)
 
The polishing cloth is well worth the modest price. Another option --

Mineral oil -- the kind found in your medicine canet -- is an effective anti-oxident. Dab a drop on the tarnished silver and polish with a clean cotton cloth. No, it hasn't harmed the finish on my silver-trimmed briars. I only apply to the silver bit, not the briar.
